5 ways to brighten up your look for racing season

Racing season is almost upon us, and I for one couldn’t be more excited. Yes, I love a day out at the tracks with my friends and sure, I dabble in some betting and champagne. But what truly makes me happy about this time of year is that it means there’s a lot more opportunity to play around with different hair and make-up looks.

And there’s no better way to inject some fun and frivolity into your look than by embracing bright, eye-catching make-up hues.

Bright shades on your lips à la Jessica Chastain

Wearing a vibrant lipstick is one of the quickest and easiest ways to take a make-up look from so-so to stupendous. Be it a pink, a red, a coral, or an orange, you can be guaranteed that a pigmented lip colour will leave you feeling like a million bucks. If you’re not so keen on having a super-bright lip during the day, try a lipstick that’s colourful but sheer. That way you can build the colour however you please.
Try: Bodyography Copacobana Lip Sheer in Disco

Bright shades on your eyelids à la Emmy Rossum

Eyeshadow hues outside of the brown and grey families can be downright scary to embrace. But that doesn’t mean you should avoid them altogether. A soft wash of orange eyeshadow up to your brow bone and just under your bottom lash line is perfect when combined with luscious lashes and a neutral lip. Just be very, very careful when applying the shadow. You definitely don’t want to be heavy handed with this look.
Try: Illamasqua Paranormal Palette, $53, Myer

Bright shades to line your eyes à la Olivia Wilde

Bright eyeshadow a bit too much for you? That’s okay, you can still brighten your eyes with a liner. Use a coloured liquid liner to line your eyelid on your lash line just where your lashes start. If you want the colour to stand out more, draw another line just above your first one. Finish with a volumising mascara and you’re set!
Try: Mirabella Graphic Girl Magic Marker Eyeliner in Blue Streak

Bright shades on your eyelashes à la Katy Perry

Wearing false lashes with a hint of colour is the perfect way to add an element of fun to your eye look without feeling like you’re going nuts or standing out too much. While you may need to take a super-close look to see it, Katy Perry is actually wearing lashes with a touch of purple to them. See? Subtle and beautiful.

Bright shades on your cheeks à la Kate Bosworth

Okay, so obviously you’re limited by the colours you can wear on your cheeks, but it’s how you wear your blush that can make all the difference. Try layering a rosy pink on the apples of your cheeks to make it look like the colour is more than just flushed (but be careful not to go so far as to look like a clown). Combine that with a glossy pink lip and a neutral eye look and you’re good to go.
Try: Lancôme Blush Subtil Rose

Bright shades on your nails à la Erica Packer

If bright make-up is just not your thing, a colourful nail hue is the perfect solution. Opt for a shade that’s vibrant but still looks feminine when paired with your spring racing frock. Think: reds, corals and pinks.
Try: Polished London Nail Enamel in Fierce

Oh, and one last tip? Don’t incorporate all of these at once. You don’t want to end up looking like this:
