The best ‘my lips but better’ lipsticks

The best ‘my lips but better’ lipsticks

I recently came across a lipstick that was unlike any other I’d tried. The result was similar to my own lips, only slightly more pink, pigmented and dewy-looking. I fell in love instantly. (FYI, it was Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Colour in Uber Rose, a limited-edition shade that’s currently available).

Before I found this Holy Grail, I’d worn shades from the red, orange and purple spectrums, but I’d never opted for a colour that simply enhanced what I already had. I’m a definite MLBB (My Lips But Better) lipstick convert, and if you’re yet to find yours, don’t worry! The bh team and our members have plenty of recommendations, so pucker up…

#1 Tom Ford Lip Color in Sable Smoke ($78, shop.davidjones.com.au)

“It’s a peachy nude – and the shade I wore on my wedding day!” – bh’s Astrid

#2 MAC Lipstick in Shy Girl

It’s a peachy nude that looks more like a warm nude on my skin tone. [It] might appear a little more peachy on fairer skin tones.” – Gilded

#3 Max Factor Color Elixir Lipstick in Star Dust

#4 NARS Lipstick in Dolce Vita ($40, mecca.com.au)

“It’s not too shiny or matte, and I don’t need a mirror to double-check if I’ve applied my lippie correctly!” – bh’s Tina

#5 Smith’s Rosebud Salve ($16, www.sephora.com.au)

“My favourite MLBB lipstick is not actually a lipstick at all, but rather a salve. Smith’s Rosebud Salve is not only cheap, multi-purpose and highly portable in its tiny, destruction-proof tin, but it also gives my lips that perfect sheen that I love, as well as a highlighted rosy flush. And it never feathers, bleeds or transfers!” – Lucrecia629

#6 Revlon ColorBurst™ Balm Stain in Honey

“I have olive skin and pigmented, rosy lips so I struggle with pinks/nudes. [One of] my faves is Revlon’s Balm Stain in Honey.” -lovejane

#7 Australis Colour Inject Mineral Lipstick in Samba

This is a perfect MLBB as it makes my lips more pink toned without washing me out!” – lovejane

#8 Poppy by Make Up Store ($35, www.makeupstoreaustralia.com.au)

#9 ASAP pure mineral lipcolour in TWO

“I’m really loving my ASAP pure mineral lipstick in colour TWO at the moment. It’s a pinky rose brown colour, but it seems to really suit my colouring. It feels lovely to wear, too.” – Rose_P

#10 essence Lipstick in All About Cupcake

“I love the super affordable ‘All About Cupcake’ from Essence for a MLBB wash of colour.” – Jacquelinee

#11 MAC Lipstick in Syrup

“As my lips tend to have a natural berry type of colour with more blue undertones, my ‘MLBB’ lipstick would be Syrup by MAC.” – Joyonara

#12 it cosmetics Blurred Lines™ Smooth Fill Lipstick in Love ($34, sephora.com.au)

“I’m not really into nude lips – I’m more of a bright pink girl – but I have a couple of favourites, including IT Cosmetics Blurred Lines Smooth Fill Lipstick in Love.” – Stay C

#13 Napoleon Perdis Dévine Goddess Lipstick in Electra ($38, napoleonperdis.com/aus)

“This is another one of my favourite MLBB lipsticks. It’s really subtle, so I like to use it in winter to give my lips that extra kick and make my complexion look less washed out when I can’t be bothered putting on a full face of make-up.” – bh’s Sam

  1. I’ve got a few of these colours. The ASAP colour, I’ve used all of that now, I really enjoyed that. It was the perfect MLBB for me. It was almost as if it was custom made for me! It felt nice to wear too. I wonder if they are still available?
