The right foundation for your skin type

One size fits all, right? Um, no. Especially when it comes to foundation. We’re all born with different skin types – not to mention skin colours – which means we need a formula that complements our complexion instead of working against it.

But what should you look for when shopping for a foundation that’s perfect for you? And what should you avoid? Let’s find out…

HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT FOUNDATION FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

If you have oily or combination skin…

Look for: matte, oil-free formulations.
Avoid: dewy, luminous formulations.

Firstly, don’t hate your oily skin – you skin is actually likely to age better as a result of its healthy oil production. And secondly, there are so many foundations that cater to your skin type, so rejoice in the options available to you. Matte, oil-free formulas will help control oil, while giving your complexion a flat, shine-free finish. It’s also worth investing in a finishing powder, too. Apply it to your t-zone after your foundation to minimise oil and make your make-up last longer.

If you have dry skin…

Look for: dewy, radiance-enhancing formulations.
Avoid: matte, powder formulations.

Annoyingly, parched skin can have a tendency to look aged if you use matte or powdered foundations. Both formulations will also highlight any dry patches of skin, and possibly even cause your skin to become drier. Always prep your skin with a creamy moisturiser to start, before reaching for a fresh, luminous foundation. These variants are very natural looking, and will enhance your skin’s radiance instantly. If you suffer from lines or wrinkles, applying hydrating primer will help to smooth your skin and boost your foundations staying-powder.

If you have sensitive or easily reddened skin…

Look for: mineral, hypoallergenic formulations.
Avoid: highly fragranced, full-coverage formulations.

Before loose mineral foundations became mainstream, it was really difficult to find a foundation that didn’t irritate sensitive skins. Today, an array of brands offer this sensitive skin-friendly product, which are generally free of known skin irritants such as fragrance, parabens and dyes. To create the best finish, use a kabuki brush to apply your loose mineral foundation, layering the product until you reach your desired coverage.

If you have acneic skin…

Look for: oil-free, medium coverage formulations.
Avoid: dewy, sheer formulations.

It may be tempting to opt for a heavy face of make-up when you’re trying to hide blemishes, but a medium coverage foundation is best. It will help even out your complexion, as well as allow you skin to breathe. (A heavy formulation will only clog your skin, which will lead to more pimples.) The trick to is to evenly apply the foundation across your entire face and neck, before using a stay-put concealer to cover any spots. Using spot-friendly foundations and concealers that contain pimple-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid will also ensure you’re helping to heal your skin while hiding it at the same time.
