Inside beauty heaven: backstage beauty at Sydney Fashion Festival

Inside beauty heaven: backstage beauty at Sydney Fashion Festival

Between the whir of hairdryers, the chatter of models as they’re made-up and the frantic shouts from the production manager counting down to showtime, it can be near-deafening backstage before a fashion show. Until that sudden magical moment when everything falls silent, the models are delectably groomed, dressed in the finery everyone is there to see and lined up ready to make their entrance.

Talk about exciting. Everyone glances around, as if aware for the first time they’re actually part of something very special. Last-minute adjustments are made silently and as the music and lights go up front of house, the models focus. It’s showtime.

From creative chaos to utter perfection in a matter of seconds, it never fails to delight me. I’ve had the pleasure of reporting from backstage at Alex Perry, Lisa Ho, Sass and Bide and Jayson Brunsdon among many others. It’s always a hot, cramped, frenetic visit and you never know quite what you’re walking into but going backstage is always a highlight of any fashion week for me.

By the way, if you’re in Sydney, you’re invited to join the action as well. We’ve prepared a guide to the Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival at Martin Place from Wednesday to Sunday: there are group and individual shows from Australian designers plus don’t miss your chance to have a MAC and Redken makeover.

Of course, we’ll be there so even if you can’t make it, check back here at bh throughout the week for show reports and goss. We’ll be backstage talking make-up with MAC at the Charlie Brown show on Wednesday so stand by for a video revealing some of the hottest trends of the season.

Now we just have to decide what to wear.

What summer make-up are you dying to wear?
