The brand names are forever etched in our brains and symbolise some of the best-known booty in the beauty biz – but how did it all start?
Here we take a stroll down memory lane and provide an in-depth insight into some our most-loved beauty brands. 

1910: Elizabeth Arden opens the first Elizabeth Arden Salon on Fifth Avenue. It offers skin treatments for the face and body.

1912: Arden develops rouge and tinted powder – pioneers of today’s blush.

1914: Arden is the first to introduce eye make-up to America.

1915: Arden introduces a light fluffy cream for the face, Venetian Cream Amoretta. It’s the first, non-greasy and non-heavy treatment.

1915: Ardena Skin Tonic is also introduced and is the first product to incorporate the founder’s name into a product name.

1916: Arden was the first to treat each product as a portable advertisement, which became the benchmark style of Elizabeth Arden. “To be beautiful and natural is the birthright of every woman,” she said.

1919: in London, Harrods places its first Elizabeth Arden order.

1921: Arden’s husband builds the first company factory in England.

1928: Elizabeth Arden introduces the first at-home spa kit, which comes complete with a record and short film entitled The Sound of Beauty with Elizabeth Arden.

1929: Arden moves the New York salon further uptown to 691 Fifth Avenue (still its current location). The new salon includes treatment rooms, a room devoted to tap dancing and fencing, plus a floor for haute couture.

1932: Elizabeth Arden introduces colour to mascara, lipstick and powder. Prior to this, there were only three selections on offer: light, medium and dark.

1933: Arden is the first to have her own weekly radio program that teaches the ‘Elizabeth Arden Way to Beauty’.

1939: Elizabeth Arden is the first to make a cosmetics commercial that is  shown in movie houses. It features American actress, Constance Bennett.

1950-1955: Elizabeth Arden Salons open worldwide in Austria, South Africa, Australia, Finland and Florida.

1966: Arden dies in October. At the time of her death, Elizabeth Arden was grossing an estimated $60,000,000 per year.
