The best and worst beauty trends from the 90s

The 90s don’t feel like too long ago but if you take one look at the beauty trends of the time, you’ll be reminded just how far we’ve come. While we hadn’t quite hit the shimmer eyeshadow and frosted lipstick phases of the 2000s, the 90s had some other questionable beauty trends.

From brown lipstick to obvious lip liner and double barrettes, the 90s were an, er,  interesting time for beauty. We’ve rounded up ten of the best (and worst) 90s hair and makeup trends.

Click through the gallery below to check out our favourite 90s looks…

Brown lipstick

Does it get more 90s than Drew Barrymore wearing brown lipstick? We don’t think so. But thanks to Kylie Jenner’s lip kits we’ve seen brown lipstick come back with a bang!

Chunky highlights

Highlights were not subtle in the 90s. If you wanted to lighten your locks up a little, you wouldn’t have a pretty bronde or balayage look, you’d have blocks of colours – eek!

Thin brows

Thick brows may be all the rage now, but back in the day, it was thin all the way. Still paying the price for plucking your brows into razor-thin little lines? Try these techniques to grow them out.

Scrunchies

The scrunchie looked good in the 90s and it looks good again now. The hair accessory has made a complete comeback in recent years!

beautyheaven loves Scunci 2pk Scrunchie and Lady Jayne Scrunchies and Ponytailers.

Blue eyeshadow

Ah, bright blue eyeshadow. It was a trend everyone tried out but is definitely one we are happy to leave in the 90s.

Tendrils

Who would’ve guessed that those ‘bits’ you used to leave out of your high ponytail would come back?! But it’s true, they have. Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Meghan Markle have all been rocking hair tendrils lately.

Double barrettes

The double barrette is another look we’re happy to leave in the past. Don’t get us wrong, we love a barrette. But the double with diamontes? No thank you.

Obvious lip liner

Was it a rule that lip liner had to be four shades darker than lipstick in the 90s? Either way, we’re glad that it’s not the case anymore.

Crimped hair

Thanks to Gigi Hadid and Ariana Grande this seriously 90s style came back into fashion in 2017!

The ‘Rachel’

Who didn’t have Jennifer Aniston’s iconic Friends haircut? It was THE hairstyle of the decade.

What beauty trends do you remember from the 90s? Did you try any of these beauty trends?
