10 unlikely winter make-up products

Winter make-up. The trend are always just what you think they’re going to be, right? Plum lips, matte skin and black eyeliner. Yep, we’ve heard it all before.

The only difference is that this time, we’re not doing things by the book, and we don’t want you to either. In fact, we’re taking cues from It girl Willa Holland (because we love the pants, socks and sneakers off her style) and rounded up 10 incredibly interesting beauty products that’ll see you score massive cool points, even just for having them in your kit.

10 PRODUCTS TO SHAKE UP THE CHILLY SEASON

#1: a CC cream

Normally in winter you see girls laden with heavy foundation that makes them look picture-perfect and totally matte, but completely ‘caked on’. Check it out, fresh-looking skin is in, so it pays to find a dewy, nourishing product that will highlight your best bits and disguise your worst ones. A CC cream is perfect, as it works to hydrate your skin while evening out your skin tone. We love Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF30 Hydrating Colour Corrector for its silky, lightweight texture and Arbonne Intelligence CC Cream ($49, 1800 650 760) for its ability to perfect the look of your complexion.

#2: navy eyeshadow

You heard it here first! Navy is the colour de jour this season and it’s high time you shared in a piece of the action. Replace your regular smokey eyeshades with on-trend navy hues to create a look that packs a punch. We love Almay Shadow Softies in Midnight Sky and MeMeMe Eye Inspire Mono Collection in Twlight as they’re silky, smooth and super long-wearing.

#3: a kick-ass mascara

It may sound like an obvious one, but nothing makes the white of your eyes pop quite as well as lashings of volume-inducing jet black mascara. Choosing something with a lifting and lengthening brush is key, which is why COVERGIRL Flamed Out Mascara and L’Oreal False Lash Butterfly Mascara are perfect.

#4: a highlighting concealer

Do away with problem areas of your skin like pigmentation, dark circles and acne scarring by choosing a concealer that helps disguise those areas while providing your skin with a radiant finish, like Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage ($49, 02 9663 4277). Better still, if dark circles are your kryptonite, opt for a highlighting pen that works to mask dark circles and highlight the under eye area to make you look more awake such as Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Concealer.

#5: a wine-coloured blush

Okay, so berry shades aren’t totally eliminated from this line up, but to keep in with the dewy, highlighted theme, opt for a cream blush instead. The cream will subtly tint the apples of your cheeks instead of looking powdery. We love Revlon Cream Blush in Charmed Enchantment, as it’s the perfect mix of rose and red wine and super silky to touch.

#6: a perfect nude lipstick

While we love a pop of colour on our lips, a great nude can really maketh the beauty look, especially if you’re rocking a smokey eye. Forget whatever you think you know about nudes, they’re not designed to make you look sick. In fact, the best nudes are the ones with a pink or honey undertone, which work to make your lips look plump and luscious. We love COVERGIRL Lipslicks Smoochies in #tru luv and Mineralogie Lipstick Vitamin E Stick in Gilded.

#7: a metallic eyeliner

Give your eyes the perfect frame with a generous lining of metallic eyeliner. Use a shadow brush to smudge it out onto your eyelid for an even more show-stopping effect. Choose a liner that’s silky smooth and super pigmented and a hue that works wonders with your eye colour, like Max Factor Excess Intensity Longwear Eyeliner in 01 or Designer Brands Kohl Eye Pencil in Metallic Blue.

#8: a highlighter

Add to the gleaminess of your radiant foundation by dabbing some liquid illuminator to your cheekbones. This will bring out the radiance of your base and make your cheekbones stand on display. We love Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator as it contains nourishing jojoba, vitamin C and and vitamin E and provides an enviable lustre.

#9: a metallic nail polish

Forget ruby reds and deep purples, metallic polishes are bang on trend this chilly season. Opt for traditional metal shades such as silver and pewter, or opt for the metallic version of your favourite berry or navy hue. We love Essie Magnetic Nail Lacquer in lil’ boa peep as it provides a perfectly shiny finish to your digits and an awesome snakeskin pattern.

#10: a proper party lipstick

You didn’t think we’d let you get away without a proper party lipstick did you? For this season, we’ve loving bright orange/red tones and darker than dark plums. To get the look (and seriously stand out from the crowd), get your hands on Benefit Hydra-Smooth Lip Colour in Tutti-Cutieand ModelCo Party Proof Matte Lipstick in Vanity Fair.
