Beauty trends for winter 2016

Beauty trends for winter 2016

With every new season comes new trends to try. And because winter for most of us means rugging up in scarves, coats and jumpers, there’s no better time to make a statement with your beauty look.

The runways at New York and Paris Fashion Week, as well as Sydney’s own Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week gave us beautiful, natural, easy-to-create looks – with just a touch of quirk. Trust us, you’re going to want to try every single one of these winter beauty trends:

Faded lips

Gone are the days of the perfect, bold pout. Lips that look faded in the middle and darker on the outside (and vice versa) were a hit at Rachel Zoe and Christian Dior. Just don’t reapply your lippy after eating or drinking – simple! Or if you prefer a more practical approach, make-up artist Lucia Pieroni suggests applying your colour to the centre of the lips and then blending it out towards the edges with a Q-tip for a blurred effect.

Glitter detail

A lot of us are scared to use glitter in our beauty look, as it does make quite the statement. But the way it was applied in a delicate line across the eyelid, and for some models under the browbone at Giambattista Valli is just too tempting not to try! Make-up artist Val Garland recommends M.A.C Mixing Medium to keep your glitter in place – simply apply it to the area and then layer your glitter on top. “It really stays put, but you have to toss the brush afterward,” she says. “It’s worth it, though!” Of course if you can’t afford to be throwing brushes out, your finger will also do the trick…

Natural-looking nails

No talons, fluro colours or tricky nail art this winter. Instead, stock up on your sheer nudes, pastel pinks and glossy top coats for natural and healthy-looking nails. Nail artist Michelle Saunders layered a sheer ivory cream polish over an opaque pale pink, followed by a matte top coat for Alexander Wang – it’s the perfect mix of pretty and practical. bh recommends: Yves Saint Laurent La Laque in Rose Romantique and Maybelline New York Color Show Fashion Collection Nail Colour in Ballerina.

Peach over pink

Skin that actually looks like skin (and not caked in make-up) has been a big trend at most 2016 shows. But for winter in particular, we’ve seen pink blush swapped with peach for a natural, radiant glow. Try using a foundation that blends seamlessly into the skin like Rimmel London Match Perfection, paired with 100% Pure Peach Glow Lip & Cheek Tint.

Slick, deep side-parts

Side-parts are back! And the slicker the better. Seen at Christian Dior, Rochas and it’s the perfect style for second- or even third-day hair. To keep fly aways at bay, hairstylist Dale Delaporte says, “Use a small amount of dry wax to lacquer the hair down and contain everything.”

Texturised hair

At the opposite end of the spectrum (and if you prefer a sleep-in during winter) lazy-looking bed hair with textured lengths is also top of the trends. Recreate this look at home by applying dry shampoo or texturising spray throughout your mid-lengths, rubbing sections between your fingers for a tousled finish.

Individuality

Victoria Beckham and Gucci showcased a variety of statement make-up looks on their models, while Isabel Marant and Céline each had several different hairstyles, to embrace individuality and being different. So you could say this trend is not having a trend?

Lazy liner

Misha Collection and Georgia Alice don’t mind if you can’t do a perfect wing – they like their liner imperfect. And we must say it looks quite chic… not to mention it’s super easy to recreate. Make-up artist Nigel Stanislaus says to simply apply a gel liner using a slanted brush and smudge it to create a worn-in effect. You can go sans mascara if you like a more grungy look, or wriggle your mascara through the base of your lashes to finish it off.

Do you like any of the trends above? What’s your go-to winter beauty look?
