Beauty jobs that are too good to be true

If the New Year has you on the hunt for a new and exciting career path ($70,000 to test nail polish anyone?), then be prepared for your mind to be blown by some ‘jobs’ that actually exist within the beauty industry. Because what better way to spend your 9-to-5 then by doing something you’re passionate about and enjoy? Aka anything involving lipstick…

Product namer

If you’re an avid OPI lover, you’ve probably noticed how each shade has its own catchy, punny and memorable name. And yep, it’s actually someone’s job to create each polish name. Actually, not just someone – it takes a whole team.

OPI – Fifty Shades of Grey Collection

“Our seasonal collections are named by a committee of very witty employees who get together to eat and drink food from the featured region, suggesting and voting on favorite names,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, executive vice president and artistic director of OPI (whose resume expands far beyond product naming).

Ummm where can we sign up? We love eating food!

“Thinking them up is the easy part, but with so many great ideas that come to each naming session, the hard part is getting everyone to agree.”

As for Suzi’s favourite shade name? It’s My Gecko Does Tricks. “Not only is the pearly green so gorgeous, [but] the name instantly makes me smile,” she says.

The Kardashian’s make-up artist

If you’re not a fan of the Kardashians, you may not view this as quite the dream job. But the fact is that Joyce Bonelli gets to travel, attend award shows and get paid over $US1 million per year (at least that’s what she hinted in an interview with Broadly) to be a part of the Kardashian-Jenner ‘glam squad’.

Since meeting Kim and Kris back in 2005, she’s been a regular make-up artist to the reality TV family and over time has become their trusted friend. Often appearing in their Instagram posts, Joyce herself has over 1 million followers on the app and her famous contouring skills and larger-than-life lashes have inspired many YouTube videos and viral trends.

And she hasn’t just ‘glamified’ the Kardashians either – she also has Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato and Lindsay Lohan on her client list.

Impressed yet?

Well there is one downside to it all… Every time she does make-up on Keeping Up With The Kardashians filming days, she’s busy sculpting their faces from 4am – 7am. So if you’re constantly hitting the snooze button, this may not be the career to copy.

Lipsologist

Instead of reading tarot cards, Jilly Eddy reads lip prints. In fact, she read ours a while back and her insights were definitely intriguing! She is actually the world’s first lipsologist and the founder of lipsology. So how exactly does one get into lipsology?

“My hobby for a long time was collecting lip prints (I still do)… People would say how great the collection is, but they would [also ask] if I could tell anything about a person from their lip prints, [so] I decided I would try and figure out if in fact our lip prints had anything to say. It turned out I had the perfect database to develop my art and science of reading lip prints. I call it lipsology. It’s fun to do and the readings touch people’s hearts. And I have been told it is “scarily accurate” (in a good way). The rest as they say is history!” says Jilly.

As for what her job day-to-day looks like…

“I entertain locally and I travel for corporate and private events. Where there are lips, there is a demand for lipsologists! Since I cannot be everywhere, I have written a book explaining how to do what I do: Lipsology, The Art and Science of Reading Lip Prints and I teach Lipsology Certification Courses. I [also] make TV appearances and do radio interviews.”

She even toured last year for five months with Yves Saint Laurent to help introduce their new Rouge Pur Couture Kiss and Love Edition!
