Should women get paid ‘menstrual leave’? A leading UK doctor thinks so, saying women who suffer from period pains each month deserve special treatment.

bh’s Carli argues women on their period should stay active, but professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, Gedis Grudzinskas believes ‘menstrual leave’ would ultimately boost womens’ motivation and productivity in the workplace.

Explaining his reasoning to The Daily Mail, he said, “some women feel really grotty when menstruating. Coming into work is a struggle and they feel lousy.

“When you feel like that, it’s harder to take pride in your work or perform as well.”

Amen, doctor!

Professor Grudzinskas suggested that like maternity leave, menstrual leave shouldn’t interfere with career progression or structure.

“It would be one to three days each month, separate to sick leave entitlement – it is not sickness, after all,” he said.

Interestingly, menstrual leave is already recognised in some Asian countries, like Japan and Indonesia.

Believed to have started in Japan in the early 20th century, female bus conductors and textile workers were among the first to request menstruation leave, but it seems they could now be joined by the masses!

Thankfully, when it comes to the monthlies, bh’s almost all-female staff are more than understanding – but as a woman who’s had to skip work in the past due to horrific period pain, I’d welcome Professor Grudzinskas’ proposal with open arms!
