Natural ways to ditch that winter cold

Winter is underway, which means you may already be nursing a stubborn, cold-weather cold. Not keen on suffering for days on end with a runny schnoz and/or nasty cough? We get you. Here’s how you can ease the symptoms (and help speed up the recovery process)…

NATURAL REMEDY #1: ESSENTIAL OILS

Lemon essential oil can work wonders to help you kick that cold to the curb (and fight off any oncoming sniffles, too). Lemon helps to boost your immunity and cleanse your body while working to fight infections, soothe headaches, and clear your mind. Just add a few drops to your oil burner or simmer some with water in a pan.

NATURAL REMEDY #2: CHICKEN SOUP

Oh, you thought this was an old wives’ tale? Nup, eating chicken soup when you have a cold actually has some merit. Scientists have found that chicken soup can help relive the symptoms of upper respiratory infections as well as works as an anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce your fluey symptoms.

NATURAL REMEDY #3: THE POWER OF WARM WATER

Dissolve some salt in warm water and gargle about four times a day. This can help reduce that annoying tickle in your throat and stop inflammation.
Then, make sure you take some extra-steamy (heat wise, get your minds out of the gutter) showers. This can help moisturise your nasal passages and relieve any congestion (like a stuffy head).

NATURAL REMEDY #4: EAT MORE FRUIT

Fruits like guava, kiwi fruit, papaya and oranges are packed with vitamin C, one of the best natural remedies for a cold. Oh, and if you’re trying to limit your fruit intake but up your vitamin C, you can also get heaps of the flu-fighting vitamin from peppers, kale, cauliflower and broccoli.

Have you had a cold that’s been bugging you all winter? Have you tried any of these natural remedies?
