Day on a plate: Lola Berry

Nutritionist and author Lola Berry’s day on a plate is all about enjoying wholesome dishes. “For me, it’s simple – real food,” she says of her approach to food. “I reckon food is there to nourish you and share with the people that you love.”

And if you’ve ever tried a Lola Berry recipe, you’ll know that eating healthy doesn’t mean sacrificing on flavour or being restrictive. In fact, Lola says that when it comes to food, indulgences are more than okay. “I think it’s totally fine to have a treat or let your hair down every now and then,” she says.  “But just be sure do it mindfully with the people you love.”

So what does a nutritionist’s daily diet look like? Take a peek at Lola Berry’s day on a plate…

Breakfast

“Breakfast time will vary depending on what time I do exercise as I like to exercise first thing on an empty tummy. So tomorrow, for example, I’m doing a 6:30am yoga class, so brekkie will be when I get home at about 8am. I love to start the day with a green smoothie – I make it with baby spinach, frozen banana, avocado, almond milk and cinnamon. If I’m not in the mood for a smoothie then it will be an omelette made with three whole eggs, kale, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, garlic, purple cabbage and onion. I really try to listen to my body and I often eat much more when I see my personal trainer as I need the extra energy. On these days I will try to up the protein and fats in my food with eggs, nuts and avocado.”

Snacks

“Usually my first snack is mid-morning and then again at around 3pm. I love to snack on raw nuts and seeds and dark or raw chocolate. I also make my own health protein balls, the S’mores Balls from my latest cookbook, Beauty Food – they’re my current favourite! I also love turmeric or beet lattes and will have one or two black coffees per day.”

Lunch

“At around 1ish most days, depending on my workload or travel, I’ll have lunch. My lunch varies every day, but it’s usually a quinoa salad with avocado, sweet potato and some kind of protein. For me, lunch is all about a good carb, protein and fats. Simple!”

Dinner

“I aim to have dinner roughly around 6-7pm each night and I love to make dinner all about protein and loads of veggies. I love a big cook-up, so cabbage, broccoli, avo, salmon cooked in coconut oil, and a simple dressing of extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice always hits the spot. I also like to add chilli flakes for that extra punch!”

Dessert

“When it comes to dessert, I like to listen to my body and see how I’m feeling but I will probably have treats after dinner three times per week. Dessert can be anything from a raw vegan treat to a bowl of berries with my homemade chocolate dipping sauce –  I just make it from melted coconut oil, cacao, cinnamon and stevia!”
