Regular sex may save your life, according to this study

If someone ever tried to hit us with the old ‘having sex will save your life’ trope, we’d get up and run away ASAP; sleaziest pick-up line ever.

But while it might not be quite that black and white, there are undoubtedly interesting links between sex and our life longevity.

Yep, according to the latest study to come out of our beloved health havens, the world’s blue zones (AKA regions where people are living well past 100 with little to no disease) seem to confirm that this is the case.

One of the five blue zone regions? Ikaria, Greece, which has reported a staggering 80 per cent of people between 65 and 100 are having sex (yes, you read that correctly). In fact, these age-defying populations even credit their plant-based diets for playing a role in their drug-enhancement-free sex lives.

According to a study in the British Journal of Medicine, 1000 men aged between 45 to 59 were studied over a ten year period, and the results revealed that the men who experienced regular orgasms halved their mortality risk of cardiovascular disease, compared to those who orgasmed less frequently. And for the ladies? A similar study of 1,500 middle-aged women found a higher rate of orgasms to also be protective against mortality risk.

If ever there was an excuse to liven things up in the bedroom, here it is.

  1. Quite an interesting subject but generally most young people think that once you are older that Sex isn’t happening in people’s lives, they don’t want to discuss the subject of Sex regarding the Elderly Population.

Great Advice that it is good for our health no matter how old you are!!!

  2. Or is it that healthier specimens are having / can have sex later in life as their circulatory/endocrine system is still functioning better than of those who live ‘western’ lifestyle and eat very unhealthy diets.

  3. I’m always skeptical of survey results because I think researchers can pick and choose which results they want. Often people who live into their 90’s or reach 100+ have been widowers/widows for many, many years or decades, so to me that negates this survey. Having said that, if having sex does promote longevity, there’s nothing wrong with that!

  4. Haha! Good point! Both studies referred to the frequency of orgasms, so I guess so? I might stop avoiding that seat near the back of the bus over the wheel. TMI ALERT: Once I was sitting over the wheel & it happened – & no, I wasn’t up to any hanky-panky on the bus!
