How-to: Do your own detox

Feeling bloated? Heavy? Like your body could do with a rest? Maybe it’s time to give your liver a break for a while and embark on your own at-home detox. It’s a good idea to give up five days of your life just twice a year to give your body some time to get rid of all the toxins that build up as a result of alcohol, processed food and all those yummy treats that you indulge in every once in a while.

But forget costly cleanses, we’re here to show you exactly how to plan your own DIY detox. Here’s how:

1.) Plan ahead. There’s no point in doing your detox the week of your cousin’s wedding or your BFF’s birthday. Look at your calendar and choose a week where you have nothing planned and make that Detox Week. Mark Monday-Friday in your diary and stick to it!

2.) In the week before your detox gradually try to ease off coffee, chocolate or any other unhealthy vice you have. If you wean yourself off slowly rather than stop cold turkey you’re less likely to have withdrawal symptoms.

3.) On the weekend before your detox starts, raid the fridge and pantry and get rid of any foods you may be tempted by (that includes those Tim Tams!). Instead, stock up on lots of fresh fruit and vegetables – enough to see you through five whole days.

4.) During your detox, drink only water (aim for at least two litres per day) and eat six times throughout the day (we recommend every two hours from 9am). Avoid meat, bread and pasta and fill up on apples, pears, cucumbers, celery, spinach, berries and nuts.

5.) After your detox don’t head straight to Maccas – gradually reintroduce meat and wholemeal bread back into your diet.

Do you suffer from junk food withdrawals? Is your diet in need of a make-over?
