How-to: decide if detox is right for you

Detoxing. From Madonna to Gwyneth, everyone’s hopping on the detox bandwagon. But what exactly is a detox plan and what does it involve? How do you know if it’s right for you? Here, we address some of your most commonly asked questions about detoxing, so you can weight up the facts and see if it’s right for you…

What is a detox?
Simply put, a detox is a way of promoting the elimination of toxins from the body through altering your diet.

Are there different types of detox diets?
Absolutely. From extreme all-lemon-juice detoxes to more moderate diets, there are a number of ways to detox your body. The most recommended and healthy way to detox is to cut out junk food and takeaway meals and start eating more fresh, raw fruit and vegetables. It’s also recommended that you drink up to 8 – 10 glasses of water a day while on a detox, to aid the body’s natural toxin elimination process.

Who should detox?
The best way to know if you need to detox is to assess how your lifestyle is being affected by your eating habits. If a diet high in refined sugar and starch is zapping your energy levels and affecting your skin and hair, then it could be your body’s way of telling you it needs a detoxification.

What are detox foods?
The most common foods used for detoxing are ones that are healthy: that includes all of the five food groups – so lean meat, fish, brown rice and bread and lots of colourful fruit and vegetables. Most people cut back their red meat intake during a detox, as red meat is thought to slow down the digestion process, hindering detoxification efforts. Other foods such as lemons, green tea, cabbage and kale, are thought to speed up the detoxification process, by promoting cleansing.

Can you tell me how to detox?
There are a number of different ways to detox, from taking a course of natural herbs and supplements, to drinking vegetable juices and cutting back on fat intake, but as with most diets, the most recommended form of detox is one that is not too jarring on your body. Avoid detoxes that use laxatives and cut out entire food groups; instead try detoxing your body naturally by cutting back on high sugar and high fat foods that can clog up your system and cause illness and reduced energy levels.
