Feed your face

Want proof we are indeed what we eat? Just check your skin. If you’re battling dryness, flaking and peeling, you might want to see your fishmonger before your facialist.

It might sound wacky, but eating fish a few times a week can improve your skin immensely. Oily deep sea fish such as salmon and tuna are among the best but any variety will go some way to boosting the condition of your skin.

Apparently the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6 have anti-inflammatory benefits and can assist the production of collagen and elastin, two things that we all know slow down with age. Of course, you can always take fish oil supplements if you don’t eat fish.

But even vegans need not feel neglected. Avocadoes, olive oil, unroasted almonds and brazil nuts are a great starting point for eating to enrich your skin. And don’t forget the benefits of antioxidants in berries, which just happen to be conveniently in season right now – thanks, Mother Nature – and tea. White and green teas get all the accolades but even standard black teas have benefits.

No one looks good when they’re dehydrated, so don’t give up on your minimum of eight glasses of water a day just because it’s chilly.  And remember fresh fruit and vegetables are the ultimate vitamin-delivery system. Skin loves A, C and E and the good news is they’re in too many fruits and vegetables to mention. You know the drill: buy whatever is in season and eat as wide a variety as possible.

And if all else fails, there is one more secret in the fridge capable of bestowing skin with a healthy glow. It’s a glass of champagne. Just the one, mind.

What healthy foods are you feeding your skin?
