Friday night without the fat

Friday night without the fat

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for… FRIDAY! Finally the weekend is here and Friday night is where it all kicks off. So what will you be doing this Friday night? Relaxing on the couch? Heading out to dinner with friends? Whatever the plans are, I think it’s safe to say that we all find it a little harder to stick to our healthy eating plans on the weekend. But the good news is that there are some healthy alternatives so that you can still enjoy your Friday night, no matter what you’re up to.

Watching a movie

Avoid: It’s only natural to want to satisfy your sweet tooth and snack on something savoury while watching Ryan Gosling do his thing, but you should probably try not to devour an entire block of chocolate, a whole packet of salt and vinegar chips and wash it all down with a bottle of Coke just thirty minutes in.

Enjoy: Instead of chocolate, try making your own trail mix with nuts, dried fruit and maybe some dark choc chips if you really can’t live without. The good news is that popcorn is still acceptable, with one cup of unsalted popcorn averaging around 43 calories. Instead of salt, season your popcorn with chilli or garlic powder. If you’re after a drink that’s fizzy and flavoursome, try mixing an organic cordial with soda water.

Dinner date

Avoid: Going out for dinner with your man or your friends is often a tricky one. It’s hard to order nothing but a salad when everyone else is ordering entrées, mains and desserts. The best way to handle this is to be in charge of picking the restaurant and avoid the more calorie and carb ridden cuisines such as Italian, American and Chinese (if you know what to order these cuisines can be ok but majority of the dishes tend to have a high fat content.)

Enjoy: Cuisines such as Mediterranean, Vietnamese, Japanese and Thai are generally safer options, with many of the dishes containing lots of vegetables and seafood.  For Vietnamese, one of the healthiest dishes is pho, an aromatic, broth-based noodle soup full of antioxidant-packed spices and for Thai, you can hardly go wrong with a vegetable stir-fry with coriander, lemongrass and ginger.

Heading out for drinks

Avoid: If you’re trying to lose weight it’s best to avoid alcohol all together, but there are some drinks that are better than others when it comes to calories. Cider and beer are the main ones to avoid, with wine coming in closely behind.

Enjoy: Alcoholic beverages that tend to have fewer calories are spirits mixed with low calorie drinks, such as vodka with soda water and lime (approximately 76 calories per serve). You could also try having the girls around for drinks instead of going out, so that you can mix your own drinks using half the amount of spirits and if you own a juicer or a blender you could use fresh fruit to make your own sugar-free cocktails.

What are your tips for a healthy Friday night? Do you find it hard to stay healthy when being social?
