The health and beauty benefits of almond milk, explained

Almonds aren’t just great raw or roasted for a healthy snack.  The benefits of almond milk are also well worth embracing.

A great option for the unlucky folks that are lactose intolerant, almond milk is one of the best non-dairy options out there.

Not lactose intolerant? Well, even if dairy isn’t an issue, the benefits of a plant-based diet are well documented, so you may still want to incorporate this healthy drink (which, at its most basic, is made up of ground almonds and water) into your diet.

Here are four good reasons why…

4 REASONS TO ADD ALMOND MILK TO YOUR DIET

#1: It helps with weight loss

Unsweetened almond milk is low in calories, so it’s perfect for those wanting to lose weight or maintain their current weight, as it won’t overload your daily calorie intake. The best part? Even though a glass of almond milk contains less than half the calories of a glass of full cream milk, it still has a deliciously sweet, nutty flavour! Just remember to not load up your healthy smoothies with sugar – this will only bring the calories right back up.

#2: It’s good for your skin

Almond milk is packed with vitamin E (50 per cent of the daily recommended amount), vitamin B2 and omega fatty acids, which are great for keeping your skin hydrated and fighting the signs of ageing. But that’s not all: Although there is no sound evidence that almond milk itself reduces acne, some studies suggest that eliminating cow’s milk from your diet can help combat your breakouts – which means having almond milk in place of regular milk may lead to clearer skin.

#3: It’s good for your bones

While almond milk is not naturally rich in calcium, many brands are calcium-fortified, which means they are supplemented with calcium. This one is particularly important for those who are lactose intolerant, as it means almond milk will give you (more or less) the same amount of calcium and vitamin D as dairy milk, ensuring it still helps to build strong bones and healthy teeth.

#4: It’s not high maintenance

Almond milk is usually low in saturated fats and therefore doesn’t require refrigerating. So, you know when you’re getting ready for work and you’re running late and you forget to put the milk back in the fridge? Well, you won’t have to chuck your almond milk out when you get home – it will still be as good as new! You’ll also be more likely to take it with you to work, or on a camping trip, because it’s perfectly fine at room temperature.
