6 reasons diet soft drink is bad for you

A lot has been said about diet soft drinks over the years, and the discussion continues about their status in the nutrition department. 6 reasons diet soft drink is bad for you

#1. It contains loads of unhealthy chemicals
Yes, diet sodas are sans a lot of calories in comparison to their full sugar counterparts, but the downside is they contain artificial sweeteners. These chemicals have been thought to contain cancer-causing properties, and while the jury is still out on whether the facts and figures are completely correct, it’s more than enough reason to cut them out of your diet, right?

#2. It can affect your bone strength
There are two reasons why studies suggest diet soda lovers have weak bones. One being the chemicals in soft drink cause the body to excrete calcium it should be holding onto, and two having a solid soda habit leaves you less likely to drink calcium-rich fluids like milk. ‘nuff said.

#3. It is addictive
One word: caffeine. Yes, it keeps us going during the tough times and may give you a much-needed boost when you’re feeling flat, but it can actually also cause an abundance of problems: insomnia, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, headaches and irritability. Not pretty, huh?

#4. It can rot your teeth
The low sugar-count in diet soda doesn’t mean you get a free pass when it comes to cavities. The high acid content in soda contributes to tooth decay by weakening the tooth enamel. Soft drink is probably a dentist’s least favourite liquid, really.

#5. It can make you put on weight
Truly it can. Despite being sans spoonfuls of sugar, it’s been said the artificial sweeteners in diet drinks screw with your body’s ability to regulate calorie intake, leaving you more likely to overindulge afterwards. The chemicals can also leave you craving sugar, seeing you reach for unhealthy sugary sweets post-soft drinking session.

#6. It causes dehydration
If you ever reach for a diet soda when you’re feeling thirsty, you need to stop. The caffeine found in soft drinks is a diuretic, which makes you urinate more often, leading to dehydration. This means drinking soft drink will actually leave you feeling the opposite of quenched. The answer? Reach for the goodness that is water instead.

Do you drink a lot of diet soft drink? Were you aware sugar-free sodas are so bad for you? Will you be limiting or stopping your intake from now on?
