Doing detox deluxe

Symptom one of post-Easter chocolate withdrawal syndrome: craving. Symptom two: twitching. By the time the après lunch slump kicks in at around 3pm, I’ll probably be under my desk in the foetal position. Still, determined to detox I am.

The trouble is, I’ve never been much good at self-denial. So I guess it’s lucky I’m far better with bribes…

I met UK detox guru Jane Scrivner when she jetted in to introduce Australia to her much-raved-about-by-Brits Detox Yourself book and programme. To be honest, I’d expected a swami of self-control who would cast kind but disapproving glances at a girl with a penchant for pinot gris and M&Ms, but Jane isn’t against the good life. “My detox is just a matter of giving your body the nutritious, good food it wants and feeling the benefits,” she said as I sipped diligently on a juice. “After 30 days of detox you might find you want to keep eating that way, but I, personally, can’t imagine never having a glass of red wine or a coffee again. I just detox once or twice a year and feel amazing for it.” And her glowing, supple skin certainly looked it.

So I’ve been poring over Jane’s book since. It describes how, over  a month, you must munch right, exercise daily, take cool showers, massage and dry brush yourself – and it sounds like a challenge. But far from torture. There’s not an LA-style cayenne and lemon only diet in sight. In fact, amongst the delish-sounding recipes (cinnamon apples with honey. Mmm) Jane has stashed emergency rations of “illegal” treats like veggie chips and even a little wine.

But the best bit? Jane has formulated spa-style treatment products to help purge your skin of sins. Like rewards for being on your best behaviour, the Mineral Scrub uses Dead Sea salts and essential oils to slough dull cells and the Mud and Quartz makes for a purifying mask or nourishing bath. My fave is the Body and Bath Oil. I’ve promised myself a luxurious soak in the grapefruit, coconut, jojoba, lemongrass and sweet fennel infusion just as soon as I survive a whole day chocolate-free.

Bribery works for me…
