BlogStar entry: the summer trend you’re not sure you can pull off

Competition: beautyheaven’s BlogStar promotion

Scared you’ll look like this? Christina Aguilera has fashioned some nasty tan disasters, and is partly responsible for the constant fear we live in of coming out of a salon looking like that!!

The risk you take walking into a tanning salon and putting your naked (or almost!) body in front of a stranger for the all important summer glow is possibly the worst time of any woman’s life.  The time between the tan and your first shower is also one of the worst wait’s you can have… the thoughts that go through your mind – “is that mark going to stay?” or “did I just bump my tan?” or “am I sweating this off?” and “is it going orange?”.  It’s completely nerve racking, and until you gain trust in your tanner, it’s an awkward beauty necessity.  I’ve learned of a fantastic product that has given me perfect tan after perfect tan.  I also have a fabulous tanner, but the product is “TechnoTan” and the ingredients in their tanning solution are kinder to the skin than many on the market.  Complete with body wash and body butter, I can keep my body tan-o-licious for up to a week.  If you don’t know of your local TechnoTan franchisee or are looking for a tan and don’t know where to start, here’s my tips:

Never attempt to do your tan yourself – lets face it, you can’t see the back of your body, and your boyfriend might tell you it’s even, but they just don’t care enough to tell you if it’s not!!  It’s a messy procedure and as you wait anxiously for it to wear off you have to clean all the towels you used, your bathroom will need a clean, and you’ll see that brown everywhere for WEEKS!!

When looking for a tanner, ask your friends who’s tans you’ve liked.  It’s a perfect way to find someone who does a good job.  The tanner is as important as the product they use, so recommendations are VERY important.

Don’t start too dark.  If you’ve never gotten a tan, and you’re thinking “I don’t want to spend the money if I can’t notice it, so I’ll go really dark”, DON’T!  It’s a shock to look at yourself in the mirror after going really dark, and unless you’ve bought new make up, your face won’t match.  You also may find certain clothing will be a no go if you go too dark, as it will make you look orange.  Start off with a nice bronzed look and if you want to go darker next time you can, but know that even a light tan will make a huge difference to your confidence!

Don’t wear a bra when getting a tan.  After having a baby, being naked in front of a stranger is nothing new to me, but if you’re a little timid in this department it’s understandable.  However, wearing a bra causes major issues with a tan, including bra strap marks (see Hayden’s nasty bikini tan right).
When going to get a tan, don’t wear deodorant, moisturiser or any body lotion.

Keep yourself completely clean and dry, as it will help the tan to make continuous, even coverage.
Be brave.

Take the first step – book yourself in, and go for it.  Starting light means that if you’re not happy, you won’t be too far off going back to your normal colour, and exfoliating will help to remove any excess tan.
