Beauty disadvantaged?

Beauty disadvantaged?

Talk about a spectacular faux pas. Can you believe any man could actually refer to women as “beauty disadvantaged”? No, then you haven’t met the mayor of Mount Isa. Say hello to Cr Molony. And no, he’s not likely to be mistaken for George Clooney anytime soon.

The western Queensland mining town is one of those rare places in Australia not experiencing a man-drought. In fact, men outnumber women by five-to-one there.  Cr Molony was only trying to play matchmaker by suggesting lovelorn “ugly ducklings”, (his words, not mine) buy a one-way ticket to the Isa to meet a man who would be happy to settle for a less than perfect specimen of the female species. Yes, you heard right. And no, it really is 2008.

My favourite part is that he was trying to be politically correct about the whole thing. Can’t you just picture it? “Hmmm, what’s the best way to say ugly? Hideous? No, too awful. Gross maybe? Uh uh, that’s very unkind. I know, how about beauty disadvantaged.”

We here at bh aren’t the only ones outraged. The story is doing the rounds in all the major Australian newspapers, especially after the good women of Mt Isa turned up at a protest meeting on Wednesday night to let their elected representative know their feelings. Bless them.

Funnily enough Mt Isa’s female population is demanding an apology over his suggestions that even unfortunate looking women could get hitched there. But wait, the mayor’s impressive case foot in mouth only gets worse.

At this point I’ll let Cr Molony speak for himself: “It’s a compliment,” he explains. “A woman can come here and transfer themselves with love and devotion in marriage from an ugly ducking to a beautiful swan. It can have a complete transformation for a woman.” That’s right, just keep on digging.

Well mayor, the heavenly beauties here at bh think you’re “charm disadvantaged”. And we’re far too polite to focus on your physical appearance.

What do you think of the term “beauty disadvantaged”?
