Let’s throw another plump, delicious prawn on the barbie, shall we? They are fabulous for the face, after all. Stuffed with completely essential omega 3s and sag-stopping protein plus iron, vitamin E and crucial zinc, this Australia Day staple is, thankfully, a super food for the skin. And grilled in good oil it won’t even bounce you off the healthy-eating wagon. Shoot a few extra zinc-rich oysters on the side and we’ll call it pretty patriotic!
Pity green and gold isn’t as kind on your complexion…
Not that a flash of leafy liner or sweep of shimmery gold dust can’t be chic, it’s just I’ve always found it’s too tricky to wear national colours together without looking like a crazed cricket fanatic (though I’m open to your green ‘n’ gold make-up tips if you’ve got them).
So I’ll stick to tweaking another great Aussie tradition and soaking my hair, rather than my precious liver, in our best locally-brewed beer. I’ve found a de-gassed James Boag’s makes a marvellous clarifying and body-boosting tonic, especially when seasoned with a sprig or two of rosemary. But if my boyfriend finds out I’ll have some serious explaining to do.
And I’ll be far too busy shopping for that (hey, it keeps a girl out of the sun and trouble). Because glamour doesn’t live on g’days, barbeques and beaches alone, with three office-free days up my sleeve, I must spend some of the long weekend scouring the last of the sales. But, in the spirit of things, I promise to explore every beauty floor with the tenacity of Flinders, leaving no lotion, potion or shiny compact unturned in my quest for fresh discoveries. Then I’ll celebrate them with a gorgeous glass of robust South Australian red.
Just for the antioxidants, obviously. Love those home-made, free radical-pulverising polyphenols… You little beauty!
Happy Australia Day holiday everyone!
