At the age of 95, Queen Elizabeth II has tested positive for COVID-19. It’s the first time the monarch has contracted coronavirus since the pandemic began. Recently, Prince Charles also tested positive for a second time.

“The Queen has today tested positive for COVID,” read the statement released by Buckingham Palace. “Her Majesty is experiencing mild cold-like symptoms but expects to continue light duties at Windsor over the coming week.”

“She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines.”

The Queen has reportedly received three doses of the vaccine. And judging by the palace statement and continuing of ‘light duties’, her symptoms appear not to be cause for concern.

Prior to the news, the Queen had sent a message of congratulations to the British women’s curling team, who won gold at the Bejing Winter Olympics.

The UK to date has had over 18.6 million cases and over 161,000 deaths since the pandemic began. The country currently has a 7-day average of 45, 153 new cases per day.

Positive cases in England are required to self-isolate for five days. If they test negative on days five and six, they no longer have to isolate. The Queen has cancelled several upcoming appearances, including Remembrance Sunday services at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

What will happen when the Queen dies?

In the event of the Queen’s passing, The Prince of Wales (AKA Prince Charles) will become King. The Duchess of Cornwall, in turn, would become Queen Camilla.

A 10-day mourning period will also fall upon the country, with the day of the Queen’s funeral considered a national holiday.

In Australia, flags will fly at half-mast. And the Prime Minister will also be expected to fly to London for funeral proceedings.

We wish the Queen a speedy recovery and good health.
