How to create galaxy nail art

If you’re a space nerd or simply love to stare up at a starry night sky, you’re going to love this latest nail how-to by Mitra Burns (Instagram: @mitty_burns). Follow her handy step-by-step guide, and you’ll have your own mini galaxy on each finger in no time.

What you’ll need:

  • 4 nail polishes (dark brown for the base and white, light brown, orange and glitter copper for the galaxy)
  • 1 eyeshadow applicator
  • 1 toothpick
  • 1 sheet baking paper

Step #1. Paint your base colour

Using a dark brown shade, paint each nail as normal and allow to dry completely.

Step #2. Outline your galaxy

Tap a little bit of white polish onto baking paper, and then lightly touch it with the eyeshadow applicator so the faintest amount ends up on the sponge. Then press the sponge to each nail 2-3 times until you’ve created the shadow of a galaxy.

Hint: There is no right or wrong shape to the galaxy shadow – just be sure not to cover the entire nail.

Step #3. Repeat with more colours

Once the white coat is dry, apply a second layer using the same process, but with a different colour. The trick is to keep each layer quite thin and faint. Mitra used light brown for a second layer, followed by a layer of bright orange and a glitter copper layer to finish.

Step #4. Add stars

Once you’re happy with your layered galaxy, you can add stars using the white polish. Simply tap some out onto the baking paper, dip in your toothpick and then press the tip to the nail to create small white dots all around your ‘galaxy’.

Good luck!
