7 Hair Trends Set To Dominate This Winter, According To The Experts

Is there anything better than a seasonal hair switch-up?

Whether you keep it lowkey with a subtle shade change or go for the full cut and colour transformation, new hair really does bring a new perspective.

And just because winter is often associated with being cold and dreary, it doesn’t mean your hair has to suffer the same fate.

Considering a visit to the salon? We scored intel from some of the best experts in the biz; here are hair trends set to dominate winter 2021.

#1 Toffee tones

@pelobylago

Platinum blondes may feel the itch to go warmer in winter and we for one think it’s a stellar idea.

“Warming shades of blonde are trending this winter,” says Kirby Lago, Owner of Pelo by Lago, who suggests that for a subtle change to look no further than blonde balayage highlights, which she considers flattering on nearly everyone.

Starting dark? “Toffee hair is a winning mix of light brunette and dark blonde,” she says. “The multi-toned rich colour is making an appearance and can be an easy way to brighten up dark locks. “

“Try adding a few golden pieces to your dark hair with foilyage. The way these highlights hit the cheek bones bring warmth and brightness around the face.”

And remember, just because the blonde is warmer doesn’t mean it’s not still prone to brassiness. Keeping a purple shampoo in your wash rotation will ensure your colour stays clean and fresh.

bh recommends: TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde Shampoo and Aveda blonde revival purple toning shampoo.

#2 Curtain fringes

@marktownsend1

The comeback of the curtain fringe has been huge in the last year. According to the 2021 Hair Report by Cosmetify, the style increased in searches by 1,016 per cent — an astronomical number!

If you’ve been sitting on the fence about this style, winter is the perfect time to try it. With less heat comes less sweat, which means your new cut won’t stick to your forehead nearly as much while you perfect your styling.

As this style of fringe is typically longer, adding volume as you style is key to helping it’s sweeping shape. Try using a brush like TONI&GUY Bamboo Brush Collection – Styling Brush with your hairdryer to provide lift at the root.

#3 Deep coppers and auburns

@thefoxandthehair

Blame it on The Queen’s Gambit or Gigi Hadid’s colour change, but red tones are front and centre to fire up brunettes this season..

“Deeper copper and auburn tones are having a moment,” says Joseph Jacques of The Fox and The Hair. “I’m seeing a lot more variation in tone and a less-is-more approach working with clients’ natural colour and enhancing it for a more ‘lived-in’ look.”

To ensure your new cherry shade doesn’t fade, protect the colour with a shine-enhancing superhero like Kérastase Paris Bain Chroma Captive.

#4 Layers are back

@pelobylago

Blunt cuts have reigned supreme for a while now, but in good news for layer lovers, varying lengths are coming back into style.

“Face framing layers are a major vibe this winter,” says Kirby. “These layers really work to enhance your facial features and are flattering on any hair length.”

This kind of cut also helps in the styling department, particularly for those wanting to lessen their heat tool usage.

“Less is more when it comes to styling in 2021. It’s all about embracing your natural hair,” confirms Kirby.

#5 Claw clips will be the must-have accessory

@maesitler

Dig out your claw clips, they’re back in action.

“They are the perfect accessory for that chic up-do with minimal fuss,” says Kirby.

You don’t have to tell us twice.

#6 Textured bobs

@codeblonde_

If you love a low-maintenance style, a tousled bob is the cut to consider.

“Above the shoulder hair, textured waves and short bobs will be big this winter,” predicts Code Blonde duo Sarah and Jammi.

Not willing to say goodbye to your length? Boho braids and messy waves will be just as sought after.

Whether you’re aiming to nail undone texture for long or short hair, try enhancing your natural waves with a spritz of Redken Fashion Waves 07. It helps to create beachy definition without the crunch.

#7 Hydration, hydration, hydration

@alannaarrington

When it comes to hair care in winter, hydration is the name of the game.

“Make sure you are using a professional hair mask,” says Kirby, who recommends Goldwell’s Kerasilk Reconstruct Intensive Repair Mask. bh also loves Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Hair Mask for textured and curly hair types.

She also says to try lowering the water temperature in the shower when rinsing your hair and avoid using heat tools where you can. But if you do reach for the hair dryer or styling tools, just make sure to use a heat protector like KMS Therma Shape 2-in-1 Spray.

Are you going to switch up your hair this winter? Which of the above trends is your favourite?

  1. I tried a Copper toner DIY dye yesterday. Some of it worked on my (bottled) Brunette hair and it really worked well on my grey hairs.
    As far as the claw clips go, I have been using them for years. They’ve never gone out of fashion for me.

  2. I went copper briefly 2 years ago, wouldn’t do it again even though I like the look of it on other people. Also recently had a curtain fringe cut in & I’m loving it so far, although it won’t be lasting beyond winter (shall start growing it back out once the weather heats up).

  3. The curtain fringe isn’t as high maintenance as you think…and I say this because I had one cut in a couple of months ago. Depending on how long you want your fringe & what your hair type is, all it requires is a quick blow-dry post-wash, that’s it. You can also grow it out come the warmer months, which is exactly what I plan on doing with mine because I have the kind of hair that can be limp when it’s hot (plus I too don’t like the feel of a fringe in summer).

  4. That’s a good idea! Mine is very straight and I think they look so youthful. I wear glasses so I always feel like ugly Betty if I ever get a brow length fringe haha. Totally get you with hair going flat in the heat! As long as I can tie it up off my face in the heat, I’m happy
