Fear not, we’ve got the ultimate formal ‘do to suit any dress. The fierce fishtail braid is loved by celebrities the world over and is easily achieved, no matter what your hair type or length. We know because we sought the help of Lizzie Liros, Director of Lizzie Liros Bridal Hair Couture to help us create the ultimate formal-worthy fishtail braid. Here’s how you can get the look at home…

Start with the right hair hue

Fishtail braids always look particularly striking on multi tonal or highlighted hair. Bh recommends colouring your hair all over with John Frieda Precision Foam Colour Salon Blends Collection in 7NBG Dark Caramel Blonde, or highlighting your hair with an at-home streaking kit such as Schwarzkopf Nordic Blonde M1 Streaking Kit.

Have your tools in order

For this look, beautyheaven recommends the following tools:

Paul Mitchell Fast Drying Sculpting Spray
– Gliders Mega Grip Crocodile Sectioning Clips 2pc
Lady Jayne Contoured Bobby Pins
Michel Mercier Professional Detangling Hair Brush in Green for Thick Hair
Lady Jayne Teasing Brush
Scunci Beautiful Blends No Damage Brunette Hair Elastics
ghd curve soft curl tong
Models Prefer Professional Human Hair Extensions(if your hair is short or fine, or simply needs a little ‘oomph’.)
Scunci Criss Crosser Tool
Ombrello Black Diamante Barrette

Get the steps right

Step 1: Part your hair deep on one side and clip in any hair extensions you may be using by sectioning your hair horizontally about halfway down the back of your head and clipping the extensions into place.

Step 2: Spray Paul Mitchell Fast Drying Sculpting Spray over your head before sectioning your hair into six parts (three on each side of your head) with your Gliders Crocodile Clips.

Step 3: Focusing on the largest front section of hair, divide this piece into a further three or four pieces and use your ghd curve soft curl tong to tightly curl each one. When removing the tong from your hair, keep the curl intact close to your head and pin it in a curl formation with a bobby pin. Repeat this until you have 3-4 pin curls at the front of your head.

Step 4: Next, curl the rest of your hair section by section with the ghd curve soft curl tong. These pieces can be bigger so the curls are softer.

Step 5: Leaving your front pin curls intact, softly brush your hair into a low ponytail on the left-hand side and secure with your Scunci elastic.

Step 6: Grab a piece of hair from the back and wrap it around your elastic to disguise it. Secure with a Lady Jayne Bobby Pin and split the ponytail into two sections.

Step 7: Grab your Scunci Criss Crosser Tool and place your two pieces of hair in each side. Follow the instructions to create a fishtail braid by taking a section of one side over to the other and vice versa.

Step 8: Remove the bobby pins from the pin curls at the front of your head and gently backcomb at the roots to add fullness using your Lady Jayne Teasing Brush. Smooth over the top with your Michael Mercer Detangling Brush.

Step 9: Brush and split the front section of hair into two parts and create a soft, loose rope plait. Loosen the plait with your fingers and use bobby pins to secure the ends at the top of your fishtail braid.

Step 10: Gently loosen your fishtail braid to make it thicker and give it texture before finishing with a spritz of Paul Mitchell hairspray and a pretty hair accessory, like the Ombrello Black Diamante Barette.

Now, get ready for some formal fun!
