The dye difference

The dye difference

Q) What’s the difference between buying hair dye from the chemist and doing it at home and going to the hairdressers to have your hair coloured? Are the ingredients in the dye any different?

– Jennifer, VIC

A) If I wanted to learn to drive, I wouldn’t ask my dad, I wouldn’t ask my wife, I wouldn’t ask my brother, I’d go to a driving instructor. Stick to the professionals.

What can happen when people dye their hair at home is they have a disaster, are a little bit embarrassed to admit it so they only tell their hairdresser half the story. In an attempt to help the hairdresser puts something on the hair that completely overreacts. But officially, if you’re doing things right in the professional environment as a hairdresser, you would strand test it anyway.

Moral of the story – want to avoid a hair colouring disaster? Get your hair professionally coloured.

I would stick my neck out and go so far as to say, I would only recommend using a semi permanent at home – not a permanent colour or one of the biggest things that’s coming through at the moment, which is home perms. Home perms are big in London!
