How to weatherproof your hair in winter

Whether it’s dryness, frizz, knots and tangles or all of the above, winter sure can do a number on our locks. So as the cooler months approach, try these six weatherproofing tips to outwit the elements. The static stops now!
Don’t skip the trim
As you switch up your wardrobe to suit the winter chill, make sure you update your locks, too. It doesn’t have to be a major make-over, but a generous trim is a valuable investment to see you through. Say sayonara to those frazzled, damaged, summer strands and grown-out colour and get ready to flaunt fabulous, frizz-free hair.
Limit the damage
The dry winter season messes with our hair just as much as it does our skin, so while you’re showing your body some love, spare some TLC for your locks. Turn to formulas that’ll give your hair a daily dose of salon-worthy shine, as well as a nourishing hit that’ll help to revive dull hair and tame frizz and fly aways.

Brush when wet
Hands up if you tend to fall victim to static hair during winter? You’re not alone, but it can be fixed. Brushing your hair when it’s wet (with a brush that’s designed to be used on wet hair) helps reduce static. And for all those other times when wetting your hair before you brush just isn’t an option, go metal. The brush acts as a conductor, minimising the electricity surge and regulating the static.

Nourishment is key
Treating your hair right is the only way to get it through the dryness, static, wind and frizz that arrives with winter. All that time spent huddling around the fire or cosying up on the couch with the air con blasting warm air might feel good, but in reality, is damaging your hair. Combat dry locks by incorporating a lightweight oil treatment into your weekly hair routine – just a few small drops rubbed between your palms and applied to the mid-lengths and ends will help protect your locks from environmental damage.

Turn the temperature down
While it might be the last thing you fancy when showering in winter, a final shot of cold water when washing your hair is well worth your trouble. The lower temperature helps to close the cuticle and seal in moisture from your conditioner, minimising frizz and maximising shine. Need to give your locks a wash tonight? Brace yourself.

Cut back on heat styling
Tool addicts might want to reduce heat styling during winter to avoid exacerbating the issue of dehydrated hair. Limit the number of styling sessions, protect it properly when do you, and always ensure you’re using the best tools available. Styling products like mousse and creams are ideal to use during winter, because they help give your style hold, while also protecting it from drying out due to heat exposure.

I think washing my hair every day tends to dry it out, but I love using oils in my hair to restore some of the shine.

Nourishment is definitely a good tip. I keep skipping the oil for my strands but it does make a real difference in the colder seasons.

Skip the heat, regular trim and nourishment.. These three are going to be my rules for this winter.

I definitely need to stop using the hair dryer and let my hair air dry, though it's harder in the winter because it's so cold to sit around with wet hair

To combat static while brushing on a non wash day, put a few drops of conditioner in a spray bottle along with a cup or so of water. Give it a shake. And spray. Goodbye static!

I dont use the shot of cold water but I am very aware and keep the water temp down when I shower as having it super hot causes all types of damage to our beauty routine including drying out skin.
