S waves tutorial with Kristin Ess
As the years have gone by, we’ve seen several hair trends grow and evolve. But none more so than the curl, which has slowly become looser and lazier through the seasons. Now, we’re seeing far less of those ‘done’ pageant curls and it’s all about laidback ‘Scandi waves’ or ‘s waves’.

Perplexed by the term ‘s waves’? Understandable. Basically, the s wave resembles your third-day curls – after you’ve slept in them, brushed them out and thrown them in and out of a ponytail a few times. The end result looks kinda like those old Hollywood finger waves, with a cool girl twist.
Favoured by superstylists such as Jen Atkin, you would’ve seen s waves on likes of Kim Kardashian West and Jennifer Lawrence. But when it comes down to creating the look on yourself with a flat iron, it can be a little tricky to master. After all, we’re not all expert hair stylists – but luckily, celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess is, and she showed us how to do s waves on my (very lucky!) head.
If you’re not yet familiar with Kristin, you’ll definitely know her work – she’s been the longtime hair stylist for celebrities such as Lauren Conrad, Lucy Hale and Jenna Dewan, who are always rocking lust-worthy locks.
Her Kristin Ess hair care line, which is launching into Priceline this month, is beloved by both her clients and the public. When it launched into US Target, it sold out almost immediately, so you know it’s good. LC’s fave? The Soft Shine Beach Wave Spray, which also helped to keep my s waves in place. So if you’re ready to master the look and see the Kristin Ess products in action, watch the video above.
Have you tried s waves before?

LOVE this! I want to try this!! I doubt my hair will hold the wave though. It’s hopeless!

As I've aged, my once dead straight hair has acquired a wave similar to the end result here.

I had something similar done in my hair once and I loved it! I always have trouble replicating things that professionals do but I will give this one a go. Great video - thankyou!!

These curls are beautiful. I wish my super dead straight hair would allow for some waves, but 3 day waves do not exist in my hair. 3 min waves are even a stretch before they fall out and back to dead straight

I feel your pain! My type 2 straight hair refuses to hold a curl unless I cram a tonne of product into it. If the curls are too loose they fall out within hours, sometimes minutes if there's even the slightest breeze around. I can get a wave to last if I keep it in a plait overnight, but that's about it.

Kate, you have beautiful hair that suit's you especially that colour. Basically I could just do this with my hair straightener but there's no need as I've natural curls :)

Oh wow it looks so good! I normally do a really loose curl and then run my fingers through my hair for that wavy look but I'll have to try this technique out!
