The sophisticated (and simple) hair trend taking over Fashion Week

Whether you’re a diehard Fashion Week fan or couldn’t give two hoots, it’s undeniable that a lot of beauty trends are born on the runway.

Both the 2020 London and New York shows were not short on inspiration, with plenty of bold looks (including bright pink eyeshadow and vinyl Dracula-esque lips) present in the line up.

But one super simple trend that caught our attention, which turned every sleek chignon and low pony into a statement, was the super straight and defined centre part.

Seen in multiple shows across both cities, including Michael Kors, Oscar De La Renta, Burberry and Victoria Beckham, the easy to recreate detail added an extra element of sophistication to every updo.

And unlike a lot of the louder eye makeup and intricate nail designs that are pretty to look at but tough to DIY, this one couldn’t be simpler.

Here’s a quick step-by-step to help you nail a centre part updo:

1. Start by prepping the hair smooth, either using a hairdryer for a softer look, or a straightener for a sleek finish.

2. Using a tail comb, use the bristle end to comb your hair back. Then, find the centre point of your hairline, use the pointed end to trace a line towards your crown. If it’s not completely straight, either repeat the process or use the tip of the comb to move over any stray hairs.

3. Tie the length of your hair into your choice of a low pony or bun. Those after a wet-look finish should run through a hair serum or smoothing cream as they do so. Opt for behind the ears like at Oscar De La Renta, or framing the face like at Caroline Herrera.

4. For a super smooth finish, tame any baby hairs using a (clean) toothbrush and hairspray.
