The beauty trends to try in 2017

It’s only January but already we’re seeing some big beauty trends emerging. Some you might be wearing already (hey there, trendsetter!) and some you might find downright crazy (but isn’t that what you said about balayage? Hmm?). Regardless, here are the hair and makeup looks you’ll be rocking in 2017.

Dot contouring

Say goodbye to the so-obvious contour stripe this year with dot contouring! It’s just like your regular contour routine, but instead of creating lines with the product you draw dots instead. This makes things way more natural, way more blendable and way more precise. So if you were too afraid to contour in 2016, make dot contouring your belated New Year’s resolution.

Peach-toned makeup

While this trend was established in 2016 with the launch of the Too Faced Sweet Peach palette and the Kylie Cosmetics Dirty Peach Lip Kit, this year it’s going to a whole other level. Too Faced has released peach lip oils, peach blush and a to-die-for peach highlighting palette, while Kylie Cosmetics has put out the Royal Peach Palette. You can buy the Too Faced Sweet Peach collection from Mecca (mecca.com.au).

Lip gloss

Matte lipstick has been dominating over the last few years and our poor old friend the lip gloss was considered so passé! But we want to take this opportunity to say we’re sorry to the humble lip gloss – you’re subtle, dead easy to apply and you look stunning on absolutely everyone. 2017 is your year, lip gloss!

Long hair

With 2016 being widely known as the year of the lob, a comeback for longer hair was inevitable. And judging by the number of celebrities rocking XXL-length hair, that time has officially arrived! Keep it sleek, sophisticated (no scraggly ends here!) and parted right in the centre.

Milk skincare

Make like Cleopatra and add some milk to your skin care regimen. Brands like Bobbi Brown and Korres are showcasing new milky formulas for products and while it’s not real milk, it certainly feels like it! Light and deeply hydrating, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. Try the Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Nourishing Milk for a fresh, healthy glow under your makeup.

70s hair

The shaggy look that was made popular in the 70s has returned. Don’t raise your eyebrows at me, it really is back! But it’s been updated with uber-wearable side-swept fringes and face-framing layers. Celebs such as Taylor Swift, Chloë Grace Moretz and Amber Heard are firmly on board and you never know – you might be soon, too.

No makeup

One of the biggest makeup trends this year is no makeup at all! Major celebrities like Alicia Keys and Kim Kardashian are stepping out to red carpet events sans makeup and we’re loving it. And I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve been rocking this trend every night while I sleep since birth – #trendsetter.

Silicone sponges

No, it’s not a breast implant. This silicone beauty tool is actually a makeup sponge and it’s being heralded in the beauty world as the new beautyblender. It works just like your favourite sponge but it doesn’t soak up any product and is ridiculously easy to clean. Just rinse and go! With beauty YouTubers flocking to the silicone sponge in droves, we reckon they’re going to be huge this year.

Lip masks

Masks aren’t just for the face anymore thanks to the onslaught of next-gen lip masks! A godsend for all of us suffering from matte-lipstick-itis (read: dry, flaky pouts), lip masks will quickly deliver a hit of hydration to your smacker. Emma Stone is a fan of the lip patch, need I say more?

Feathered brows

According to Kim Kardashian’s makeup maestro Mario Dedivanovic, the bold #InstaBrow is over. I know, you’ll have to wrestle the brow pomade out of my hands too. But don’t cancel that appointment with your brow specialist just yet because defined arches aren’t going anywhere – they’re just getting a little softer. Try switching up your pencils and pomades for a gel like Benefit Gimme Brow.

Will you be trying any of these beauty trends in 2017?
