Ariana Grande has been rocking her signature ponytail for as long as we can remember. We love the commitment to the style but also have so many questions. Like why does she always have it in a ponytail? And is she hiding something up there?

Well, Ariana’s hairstylist Chris Appleton (who also works some serious mane magic on Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian West) has shared one of the secrets behind the ponytail – and it’s not what we were expecting.
Chris toldPopsugar that the height of Ariana’s ponytail is always well thought out. “With ponytails, it’s all about the placement,” Chris says. “The higher you go, the fiercer it looks. The lower you go, the more professional or serious it looks.”
And one look at Ariana’s performances will show you that her ponytail always abides by this simple rule. When Ariana performed at the March for Our Lives anti-gun violence rally earlier this year (which was one of her much more serious performances) she wore her hair in a very low ponytail.
Just a few months later at an iHeartRadio performance, it was all about the super high and swishy party ponytail for Ariana! And that’s just the beginning for the ‘fun’ ponytails. Chris likes to let Ariana show off her personality through hair extensions and braids, too.
Chris explains that the height and placement of a ponytail can change your whole face shape. “It can change the whole shape of your face. It can snatch your face upward and lift your eyes, or it can pull your eyes down,” Chris says.
