So if you’re looking for quick and easy hairstyles that will save you from your trusty banana clip, you’ve come to the right place. We got Peter Beckett, hair stylist and brand ambassador for Moroccanoil, to show us his best 5-minute hairstyles that suit a multitude of lengths and hair types. Ready to do away with that basic ponytail? Set the timer and let’s do this.
5-minute hairstyle #1: When you want heat-free waves
Why it’s so quick: No heat styling required!
Products to have on hand: Hask Hair Repairing Shine Oil – Argan Oil, Moroccanoil Beach Wave Mousse, OUAI Matte Pomade ($36, sephora.com.au)
Peter’s steps to create the look:
-
Cocktail together in your hands one pump of hair oil, a ten cent piece of pomade and a golf ball-size amount of mousse. Apply this all throughout your dry hair.
-
Separate into 3-4 even sections, depending on the amount of hair you have.
-
Loosely braid each of the sections and secure the end with an hair elastic. Allow to air dry (or leave overnight). Don’t know how to braid? Learn here.
-
When dry, take out the braids and use a pea-size amount of pomade, spread evenly in your fingertips and loosen the braids until you’re happy with the texture and look.
5-minute hairstyle #2: When you need to hide greasy roots
Why it’s so quick: You can use your hair’s natural texture to make it work.
Products to have on hand: Moroccanoil Mending Infusion
Peter’s steps to create the look:
-
On both sides of your head, take a loose section straight back from the tops of your cheekbones, to the middle at your crown. Now you have a top and bottom section.
-
With the top section pulled back loosely in a ponytail, make a tight braid of your choice at the crown.
-
Tie off the braid with a small elastic and let the braid hang freely.
-
Massage a pump of Moroccanoil Mending Infusion in your hands and apply it to the bottom section for separation and control. Use whatever is left in your hands for the top section and massage for detailed separation and softness.
5-minute hairstyle #3: When you need volume, fast
Why it’s so quick: A hairdryer is the only heat-styling tool you need.
Products to have on hand: muk Blow 3900 - IR, John Frieda Luxurious Volume Perfectly Full Mousse, Fudge Light Hed-Ed Hair Oil, Goldwell Style Sign Big Finish, Aveda Wooden Paddle Brush.
Peter’s steps to create the look:
-
Combine one pump of hair oil and a golf ball-size amount of volumising mousse together to form a liquid mixture. Apply it throughout your whole head to almost-dry hair.
-
Using a paddle brush and your hair dryer, smooth your hair by brushing side-to-side, before going over with the brush and hairdryer so there is no specific parting. This technique gives you loads of natural volume!
-
Next apply one pump of finishing spray to your hands and spread like you would a face moisturiser. Look up to the ceiling and around the crown area of your hair, softly twist the hair into a spiral. Once twisted, wrap around into a neat bun, clip in place and allow to cool.
-
When cool, take out the clip and swish side-to-side for loose, sexy hair with lots of volume. Apply a little more finishing product if needed through the mid-lengths and ends.
5-minute hairstyle #4: When you want effortless cool
Why it’s so quick: You can work with your natural texture and minimal heat.
Products to have on hand: Moroccanoil Styling Gel and Treatment, ELEVEN Australia Extra Hold Styling Clay.
Peter’s steps to create the look:
-
Mix one pump treatment, a ten cent piece-size amount of styling clay and a palm-size about of styling gel.
-
Tilt your head back and starting at your hairline, apply this cocktail of products evenly throughout the top and sides of your face, stopping at your crown and just behind your ears. Keeping your head back, pull a wide-tooth comb through the top and sides, leaving the rest of the hair natural with a dry texture – the top and sides will now have a wet-look appearance.
-
With your hair dryer and a diffuser on a low heat, keep your head back and dry the top and sides until dry. This will keep the soft wet-look appearance and hold the style in place.

That's great, light braids are cool. Otherwise a high bun.

Could you seperate these and create tutorials? I am not that bad with makeup but I am hopeless with hair products, the steps here are great but tutorials might make them easier for me to remember :)

Reading through the comments, it seems that I am not the only one asking for pictures.

Great tips I'm always lazy to get out of bed in the mornings and rush myself LOL. Would be great if there were some pics of the styles though?!

My go to quick hair is either a bun, braid or even a half up style. This article was inspiring but I struggle with the instructions a bit and would’ve loved photos accompanying them (but then again I’m a visual learner so might be just me). I will try these tips out next time I’m stuck for a quick do

I love overnight braids, I always like the beach wave look and its minimum effort for a great result.

At the risk of sounding less than intelligent and mature... I prefer books with pictures :-p I'm already so hopeless at hair things, I would probably follow any of these and end up with a bird's nest just for lack of talent!

I'm not used to mixing 2 or 3 different styling products together. For me, it's either mousse or gel or hairspray. #1 & #3 both take longer than 5 minutes & neither would hold my waist length hair throughout the day.
My rush morning go-tos are a queue, a plaited bun or just throwing on a headband.

Photos would be great to go with the instructions. The braids overnight always leave me with strange crimp-like hair rather than beach wave hair. I find its btter to twist sections of hair into a bun and leave it overnight for the loose wave effect.

Good tips. Pictures would be good or even a how to video. My go to style is a high pony tail when short of time.

Some pictures or a video would really help me! I wear a ponytail or bun pretty much daily, and my hair is suffering as a result!
