Gentle shampoo

I’ve always had frizzy hair and just blamed it on the humidity in Brisbane, but for the last year I’ve been living in Japan. Japan is CRAZY humid in summer, but my hair was totally fine. I think it was the shampoo and conditioner I was using. I remember thinking it didn’t seem to do a good job of cleaning my hair at first and the conditioner seemed thin compared to what I was used to, but then I got used to it and my hair was actually lovely and soft.

I moved back to Aus about 2 weeks ago and I’ve borrowed a few different shampoos, but they all made my hair feel really dry and it’s looking so dull now!

Can anyone recommend some gentle shampoo and conditioner that doesn’t dry out your hair to that “squeaky clean” state? Maybe sulfate free?

Janeka, here is the thread about how the quality of water in different areas influences the condition of your hair:

I think the above thread has a suggestion about using lemon juice or vinegar hair rinses to remove the buildup from the minerals in hard water. This is something that you could try.

One thing that is rarely talked about is protein in hair products. A few years ago, I discovered that hair products with lots of protein make my hair feel brittle and straw-like. Perhaps have a look at your current shampoos and conditioners to see if they have lots of protein in them.

EDIT: Whether your hair needs protein or not depends on the structure of your hair, whether it is damaged from excessive hair tools, hair dyes etc. My type of hair needs moisture. If you search the Internet for curly girl hair forums, there is lots of information about protein/moisture balance. Here is one article that could be helpful for you:

As far as recommending products, please let us know if your hair is oily, normal or dry. It would also be good to know how much money you can afford to spend on hair products.

    Hi Janeka,
I think your topic is very very similar to another forum which was questioning if water effects your hair condition or how shampoo works.

I am originally from Malaysia and my hair was in good condition. Then I moved to Adelaide and had terrible hair loss and my hair felt brittle. I am now living in Melbourne and my hair feels better again.

Basically i think the cause is the type of water in the area rather than the type of shampoo you use. In summary, the hardness in the water (i.e. calcium carbonate level) affects your hair. The harder the water, the worse you hair becomes. Shampoos don’t lather normally too.

Brisbane and Adelaide have the highest level of hardness in water in Australia.
    See link: http://www.lanfaxlabs.com.au/hardness.htm

I did find that using Kerastase hair products and using a hair mask daily (instead of hair conditioner) helps to a certain extent.
