New Year hair resolutions to stick to in 2016

We all know it too well. The holidays bring out the best intentions for a healthier and happier year ahead, but by February our resolutions have all gone out the window… except for this year. Here’s 12 ways to improve your hair in 2016.

#1 OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

The same way we chuck out food when it goes stale, you should be doing the same with your beauty products. Have a mass clean out two or three times a year and say goodbye to those rusting hair stylers and dusty brushes you’ve been stashing for god knows how long. And while we’re on a purging-spree, let’s not forget to throw out any old styling products like hairsprays or gels. Come on, let’s start the new year with a good old fashioned detox!

#2 TREAT IT RIGHT

We often overlook the fact that our scalp is actually skin, which means that just like the rest of our body, we should be cleansing, exfoliating and nourishing it with the right products and care. Give your scalp a healthy exfoliate and double cleanse once a week with a shampoo that works to prevent product build-up, which can clog pores and impact healthy hair growth.

#3 EAT YOUR HAIR HEALTHIER

After a holiday food bonanza, most of us will make the resolution to start eating healthier, but it’s not just our bodies that benefit from this decision. Protein is essential for healthy hair growth, so stock up on goods like fish, meat, dairy products and nuts. If a flaky scalp is your mane concern, munch on sweet potato and carrots, which will help to protect and promote healthy sebum production.

#4 PROTECT YOUR COLOUR

Whether you’re a blonde, bronde, brunette or redhead, nothing’s more frustrating than shelling out the bucks for a new hair hue only to watch it fade. It’s money down the drain, literally. So, in 2016 invest in good hair products that will not only protect fade but extend the life of your colour.

#5 TAKE IT DOWN A NOTCH

Don’t get us wrong, we love dry shampoo – it’s every beauty ed’s safety blanket, but like any product, it can cause clogging and build-up. Resist the urge to use it daily and you’ll have fresher-looking locks in no time. If you can’t bear to let go of your one and only, try using a gentler dry shampoo.

#6 BANISH THE BRUSH

Well, not totally. Hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, so brushing it in this state is likely to cause serious snapping. If you’re in a bit of a tangle, try combing your hair through while the conditioner is still slickly coated – this will help avoid breakage and reduce tension on the scalp.

#7 GO TO REHAB

A good way to start the new year is with a toast to the old one, so while you still might be enjoying that summer sunshine, salty water and humidity, don’t forget to treat your hair to a bit of TLC. Here’s a good place to start, or try one of these hair treatments.

#8 CHOP OFF THE DAMAGE

There’s a reason women cut their hair after a momentous occasion, and the same thing should be said of a new year. Start again in 2016 and go the chop – not only will it rid your locks of dead, brittle and dry split ends, but it marks a new year and a fresh game plan. Hey, if Lara Bingle’s doing it…

#9 COMMIT TO THE COLD

This tip’s an oldie, but a goldie. A blast of cold water helps create shiny locks, encourages growth and seals the cuticle for fuller, thicker, stronger hair. Ingrain this in your shower routine, now!

#10 PROMISE PROTECTION

Addicted to your straightener? Can’t leave the house without tonging your ends? Then be kind to your mane attraction and arm yourself with the best tools to minimise damage, like the Philips MoistureProtect Straightener, which monitors your hair for safer styling. Oh, and don’t forget to prep your strands with a heat protectant spray, every single time.

#11 LET YOUR HAIR DOWN

In 2016, be willing to let your hair down, both figuratively and literally. Give your locks a break and ditch damaging hair elastics which can pull your hair and cause scalp issues, and embrace your locks. Have some fun and change things up with a clip in fringe to frame your face and totally transform your look. Sometimes all it takes is a small change to feel like a new woman.
