Best shampoo for oily hair

Is there any hair type more annoying than oily hair? Yes, each hair type has its pros and cons, but surely oily hair requires the most upkeep. Greasy haired girls are easily spotted out in the wild – we’re the ones rocking hats and beanies year-round, emptying cans of dry shampoo into our locks on the daily and wearing our hair down for a day, then in a ponytail for the rest of the week. That is, until we find the best shampoo for oily hair and have our world turned upside down.

It took me a long time to find my oily-haired match. As someone with oily hair who also colours it on the regular, I’ve often sacrificed my scalp at the expense of keeping my colour intact – especially when I’ve had hard-to-maintain colours like platinum blonde and pastel pink.

After a few years as a beauty editor, I’ve learned a few things and tried a few formulas that have promised to balance my oily scalp and protect my colour. Now not all of them have lived up to their claims, but I’ve definitely found a few that have – and that’s why we’re here today. Because as it turns out, our oily-haired members have found some good ones too!

So if you, like me, struggle with an oily scalp that just won’t quit, it’s time to upgrade with our edit of the best shampoo for oily hair.

Klorane Shampoo with Nettle

“I was recommended this product in the pharmacy for my oily hair and so have been trying it the last 2 weeks. It really did meet my expectations, I now only have to wash my hair every second or third day rather than every day. And a little bit goes a long way. At first I thought it was only a small bottle but you only need to use a 20 cent piece size for every wash.” – bh member Elliarna

Sukin Oil Balancing Shampoo

“Finally Sukin has a shampoo for oily hair and it is very good! I am have been using this shampoo for 2 weeks and I really like it. Even during hot weather I don’t need to wash my hair everyday and it doesn’t leave dry ends like other shampoos. It also smells good and I totally recommend it.” – bh member slilian

muk Haircare Head muk Oily Scalp Shampoo

This has a gorgeous fruity aroma, a clear lemon coloured liquid. It makes your hair and scalp feel very fresh. It lathers up nicely, and it is easy to rinse away. I love all muk shampoo and conditioners and always use whichever one suits my hair. This is ideal to use in the hotter months when my hair tends to be oily. I love that this is formulated in Australia, and is cruelty free.” – bh member Margaret 322

Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Everyday Shampoo Original Formula

“I’ve been dealing with a bit of oiliness lately so I decided to give this shampoo a try. I’m glad I did. I was stuck in a rut of having to shampoo every day to keep the oiliness at bay, but that was just making it worse. With this shampoo, I’m back to shampooing every other day. This shampoo leaves my hair soft, clean, shiny and manageable. The tea tree smell is quite strong, but it fades to a pleasant scent once hair is dry. Nice lather and a bargain at the price.” – bh member Lucrecia629

Redken Scalp Relief Oil Detox Shampoo

“My hair was getting really oily on the second day after washing and finding an oily hair shampoo was impossible. After searching beautyheaven I found an article on this product and thought I’d give it a try. I raced to my local Hairhouse Warehouse and although I thought it was expensive, it proved to be worth it. It smells great and keeps my hair looking great for at least two days.” – bh member BeautifullyMe

Shu Uemura Art of Hair Cleansing Oil Shampoo Anti-Oil Astringent Cleanser

“This shampoo is ridiculously good. When I first saw the words ‘cleanisng oil’ in the name, I was really hesitant. But then I remembered that my facial oil actually helps to balance my oily skin, so perhaps this shampoo could do the same for my scalp. I decided to give it a try and haven’t looked back. The yuzu extract in the formula helps to slow down my scalp’s enthusiastic sebum production and keeps it clean without exacerbating my dry ends. Obsessed!” – bh’s Kate

De Lorenzo Tricho Scalp Control Cleanser

“I have fine, oily hair that requires daily washing. As well as this I have a sensitive flaky scalp which has always reacted to every shampoo I have tried. My sister got me this shampoo plus the conditioner and toner to try. My hair feels completely clean after washing and it gets rid of all the oil. I still need to wash my hair everyday but it keeps the oil at bay all day unlike other shampoos. Added to this is the fact that it doesn’t irritate my scalp and has got rid of all the flakiness! It smells great too. This is now the only shampoo I will use.”  – bh member DeeBee
