How to get tousled waves like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s

The Olsen twins have been nailing the casual but chic beauty brief with brushed-up brows, dewy skin and edgy eye makeup for years. But of course, the look wouldn’t be complete without those tousled and effortless, ‘it girl’ waves.

We can say goodbye to frustrating attempts at recreating this look because the Olsen twins, and their hair stylist Mark Townsend, have told Byrdie exactly how it’s done. And, lucky for us, it’s way easier than it looks.

Step 1: Air dry

It all starts with air drying your hair – Mark rarely uses a hair dryer on Mary-Kate or Ashley. “I wash my hair every other day and never blow-dry it,” Ashley tells Byrdie. “I go out with wet hair and just let it dry naturally.”

Step 2: Loose curls

Even though Mark rarely uses a hair dryer, the technique for wavy, tousled hair does call for a round curling wand. “All I do is grab random chunks of hair here and there and wrap them around the barrel,” he says. Mark recommends that you don’t hold hair on the barrel for too long and suggests you gently shake the curl out before it sets. That way it will stay looking loose.

Step 3: Add texture

For texture, Mark uses a drugstore dry shampoo instead of a texturising spray. In particular, he uses the uses Dove Hair Therapy Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo ($6.99, priceline.com.au) and sprays it in small sections from root to tip. “It gives their hair the best texture,” he says. “It has starch instead of powder, which literally builds layers, creating a piecey look, and locks in the volume. Plus, it delivers a matte finish.”

Desperate for a new dry shampoo? beautyheaven loves Schwarzkopf Extra Care Dry Shampoo and Batiste Marrakech Dry Shampoo.

Step 4: Finishing touches

Mark finishes up with a dry oil spray (the Serge Normant Meta Sheer Dry Oil Finishing Spray, to be specific). “I only apply it on their ends, to make the hair a little more piecey and close the cuticle of the hair,” he says.

If you need a new finishing spray, beautyheaven loves KMS HAIRPLAY Makeover Spray and Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray.
