How to keep your hairstyle, even when sleeping

We’ve all suffered the trials and tribulations of a bad hair day (I for one, have suffered many), but did you ever stop to think that the cause behind these BHDs stems from messing up your hair while you sleep?

It all comes down to sleeping smart. In an effort to ward off all BHDs for good, here are five tips on how to keep your hairstyle while you sleep, so you can wake up with a magnificent mane (after catching a few extra zzzs).

Upgrade your pillow

Do yourself and your hair a favour, and stop using cotton pillows STAT. The fabric is said to dry out your hair and create static, bed hair, knots and frizz. Can’t have that. Test-drive a silk pillowcase, and you’ll notice a welcome change to the texture of your locks: less kinks, fly aways and a cooler temperature, which stops your locks from sweating (and then knotting, horribly). All in all, if good hair’s your thing, it’s a no-brainer.

Don’t resort to hairspray

We’ll let you in on a little secret: good hair ALWAYS starts with the right prep. Get it wrong, and your style will likely fall apart or flatten out in just a few meagre hours. While hairspray is great (and boy does it help), get busy with a volume-inducing product like a styling cream or mousse before taking to the tools to create your style.

Create some curls

Plaits and braids are a great way to achieve natural-looking curls. Simply braid your damp hair the night before (dampness = less frizz) and in the morning, brush them out with a soft paddle brush, and finish with a spritz of glossing spray. Remember: the tighter the braid, the tighter the curl!

Make waves Slept-in waves are a lazy girl’s dream (literally), and the easiest way to achieve them is as simple as leaving your damp hair in a loose bun at the top of your head. Once you’ve hit the snooze button for the last time, use your fingers to comb through your hair for naturally beautiful waves. Finish with a light texturiser or hairspray. bh recommends: Scunci No Damage Elastics and Knotted Ponytailer, Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray, evo builder’s paradise working spray, L’Oréal Paris Hair Expertise EverStrong Mineral Salt Texturising Spray Do the old-school roll Perhaps the only beauty product associated with both the glamorous life and grannies in bunny slippers – rollers are undeniably cool. And since there are as many different types as there are looks to create them with, you can try your hand at them all. All you have to do is roll your hair before bed to wake up beautiful.   bh recommends: Lady Jayne Self Hold Rollers, Freestyle Home Salon Velcro Rollers, VS Sassoon Secret Curl Silicone Pop Up Rollers, Remington Pro Shine Hot Rollers – H5600AU Do you have a trick for waking up with a beautiful mane?
