How To Get Hilary Duff’s Cool Girl Waves

Obviously, we all know and love Hilary Duff as the Lizzie McGuire of The Lizzie Mcguire Show and The Lizzie McGuire Movie fame.

But in the years since her stint as an adolescent icon, Hilary has firmly cemented herself as a very normal person, despite graduating from a generation of uniquely ‘troubled’ Disney child stars.

From her down to earth attitude, to her accessible pop music, the mum of four is all about maintaining the girl next door image that helped to project her to stratospheric fame.

A key part of this? Her signature, lived-in wavy hair, which her hairstylist Barb Thompson says is all about cultivating an effortlessness — surprisingly easy with the right products…

“We leaned into effortless, lived-in glam with soft, undone texture and a glossy, touchable finish that moves beautifully,” Thompson shared via a press release.

“I prepped her damp hair with UNITE Hair 7SECONDS Detangler ($44.10 from Oz Hair & Beauty) to smooth and protect,” Barb explained.

“Then [I] layered the hero product, UNITE Hair 7SECONDS Anti-Frizz Leave In Thermo Mist ($40.66 from Image Beauty), through the mid-lengths and ends for heat protection and frizz control while keeping the hair fluid and lightweight,” she said.

“At the roots, I misted UNITE Hair BOOSTA Volumizing Spray ($34.42 from Oz Hair & Beauty) to create lift and support, then rough-dried to enhance natural texture,” she went on to say. “I used this at the root area only to build lift without weighing down the lengths.”

“Before refining the wave pattern, I lightly misted UNITE Hair Le:Play Hairspray ($37.32 from Catwalk) into each section prior to curling with a 1.25-inch iron for an added layer of heat protection and lasting, touchable hold,” said Barb. “I alternated directions through the mid-lengths, while keeping the ends slightly softer for a modern, effortless feel.”

“After allowing the curls to cool, I had Hilary flip her head over and sprayed UNITE Hair TEXTURIZA Spray ($47.25 from Oz Hair & Beauty) throughout to break up the curls and create airy, lived-in separation — this helps expand the wave pattern,” she explained.

“I then added a veil of UNITE Hair 7SECONDS Glossing Spray ($41.85 from Oz Hair & Beauty) for reflective, stage-ready sheen and emulsified a drop of UNITE Hair BLONDA Oil ($55.89 from Oz Hair & Beauty) through the ends for polish and softness, finishing with a targeted mist of UNITE Hair GO365 Hairspray ($41.85 from Oz Hair & Beauty) at the crown and where extra hold is needed,” she dished.
