Products to detox your scalp and hair
We are so committed to looking after our skin, layering on oils and serums, hand creams and foot balms, using scrubs on our face and body – but how often do you strap in for a nice self-care Sunday and focus on your scalp instead of a nice jade-roll? Never? We thought so. But your scalp is highly important. In fact, it holds the key to a healthy head of hair. We enlisted the help of Saint Tu, Head & Shoulders’ Principal Scientist, to find out exactly how you can detox your scalp and hair...

Why do we need to detox our scalp and our hair?
“Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp,” says Saint. “Our scalps are skin, so we should treat them with the same level of attention we give to our faces by cleansing, protecting and moisturising them.” He explains that a detox for your scalp is basically just a deep clean and rinse to, “remove build-up of products, environmental elements and sweat caused from every day, which can lead to dull, flat hair and breakage － which none of us want!”
But, cleansing isn’t enough – moisture is also necessary (in the same way it is for your face). “Conditioner is one of the best and most efficient ways to provide this,” Saint says. “Conditioner should always be used from the root to tip of your hair. For best results, leave for up to two minutes to allow time for your product to nourish both your hair and scalp before rinsing.” He also advises that massaging your head while you wash it is helpful as it will stimulate your scalp and improve circulation.
Why is post-summer an ideal time of year to detox your scalp and hair?
“Warmer weather can create a multitude of problems for your hair and scalp health,” explains Saint. “Not only are frizzy and dry locks hard to manage, there’s one secret problem that affects a staggering 79% of Aussies – dandruff. Humidity and direct sun can be a trigger for the itchy, flakey symptoms associated with dandruff. Something as simple as an increase in body temperature and sweat on your scalp can worsen dandruff.”
What range of products would you use to detox your scalp and hair?
Saint says its best to keep things simple. “The most effective product will thoroughly cleanse your scalp to remove excess build-up but also nourish it at the same time,” he says. “The Head & Shoulders Supreme range [consisting of a moisture, smooth and colour care shampoo and conditioner] contains nourishing Argan Oil, as well as anti-dandruff ingredients to cleanse, protect and hydrate your scalp as well as nourish dry ends.”
Are there certain ingredients you should look for?
If you’re looking to tackle symptoms of dandruff – yes. “If you’re prone to an itchy, flaky scalp, choose hair care products with active ingredients to fight the symptoms of dandruff,” advises Saint. “Ingredients like Ketoconazole and Zinc Pyrithione are antifungal agents that actively decrease the growth of yeast caused by humidity, so make sure these key ingredients are in your shampoo and conditioner.”
Are there hair products you should avoid if you want to keep your hair as healthy as possible?
“When the weather is warmer, try to embrace your natural hairstyle and avoid over styling,” explains Saint. “If you are experiencing a dry scalp, avoid using hot styling tools and heavy products that can aggravate the scalp and trigger dandruff.”
