10 things to do with your hair before summer gets here

November means two things: Christmas is just around the corner – and so is the heat.
So if you froth on being organised, you’ve most likely already made a dent in your Christmas shopping, and you probably want to get your hair in tip-top condition before summer, too.
We put out a hair SOS to John Vial, FUDGE Creative Director, and he came to the rescue. Here are the 10 things you definitely need to do to ensure you (and your locks) are ready for a long, hot summer…
Get your chop right
John says to invest in a session in the hairdresser’s chair. “The perfect summer haircut should be wash-and-wearable, so the shape of your cut is essential.”
Don’t forget the SPF
Prevention is far better than cure. To protect your scalp from strong sunrays, use products containing SPF where possible. bh recommends Hair Nutrition Dry Shampoo with SPF or Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, which provides protection for up to 16 hours. And when you’re slip-slop-slapping, don’t skip your hair parting!
Get braiding
Want to keep your hair off your face in the warmer months? John recommends wearing braids. “Braids are still big for this summer. This style gives you the perfect opportunity to pop in a leave-in treatment as well.”
Make your mask your BFF
bh suggests taking advantage of every 10-minute window to apply a heavy duty treatment to your locks. We love TIGI Catwalk Oatmeal & Honey Mask. This nourishing gem contains acacia, wheat protein and vitamin E to replenish dry hair and leave it soft and shiny. Remember: if you rinse the mask off before 10 minutes has passed, it won’t have time to penetrate the hair follicles properly.
Blondes, be prepared
As John explains, “Blonde hair needs extra protection; a good conditioner to protect against chlorine and UV protection is key.” Fudge Colour Lock Shampoo and Conditioner contain powerful colour shield technology, so it’s the perfect duo to keep your colour looking bright and bold.
Save your hair with sea salt spray
Use a texturising sea salt spray on dry hair to fake the ‘beach look’ without dealing with the damage of seawater. If you’re going for an effortless look on a balmy night, the VO5 give me texture dry texturising spray is a winner. It features a light hold formula that’ll see your boho style last through the night.
Try the ‘wet’ look
John promises the ‘wet’ look isn’t going anywhere. “We saw so much ‘wet’ look hair on the runway last Spring/Summer – and for good reason! It’s perfect to replicate in summer and means that you don’t need to worry about the humidity getting the better of your ‘do.” Fudge Hair Gum delivers extreme hold and flexibility without causing build-up in the hair.
‘Up’ your shine
If your hair is looking a little brittle due to overexposure to the sun, use a shine-enhancing product like Suigo Hairlook Arts Ultimate Shine Repair. It helps to control frizz and protect hair colour from fading. Fun fact: it can also be added to hair dye to create greater shine!
Rock a ‘do with a donut
“Styling your hair with a hair donut is a great way to protect the ends from the harsh sunshine,” says John. It also means you can wash and wear your hair with ease by scooping it up into a flawless bun every time – which is super handy if your hair kinks or frizzes up when left to dry naturally. bh recommends Lady Jayne Bun Styl’r Kit Dark M/L.
Protect your scalp
Constant sun, sand and surf can leave your hair and scalp a little worse for wear. To prevent this from happening, arm yourself with nourishing hair products. Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy Moisturising Dry Scalp Daily Shampoo and Conditioner work to hydrate and cleanse hair as well as restore the scalp’s natural moisture balance.

ALWAYS get my hair coloured and trimmed before summer. I usually let my hair go natural in summer to let it repair from the winter.

I abandoned my pre-shampoo oil treatments during the cold weather. Now that it's warmer, I'm back to them again.

My hair is really dry! Too much heat styling without heat protectant. I've been really slack with haircare.
