How weather affects your hair
Ever wondered how your hair can look perfect the one day, but suddenly becomes a bad hair day disaster the next, despite the fact that you styled it exactly the same way?
According to the experts at Sunsilk, the weather can play a big role in how good (or bad!) your hair looks, affecting both the way your hairstyle sits, and the overall condition of your strands. Here's what it can do...
Aside from mussing up your perfectly styled hair ‘do and causing knots and tangles in loose hair, the wind can also cause your hair to become dry and brittle. “Wind can impart a drying effect on your hair by increasing the rate of evaporation of moisture in it,” warns Daniel Mullette, Research and Development at Sunsilk. “The same way wind can help dry your laundry, so too can it take the moisture from your hair.”
On a humid day, dry hair will attract and absorb the water vapor in the air, causing the structure of the molecules in your hair to break down. According to Mullette, if your hair is fine, the excess moisture absorbed will become too heavy for your strands, causing loss of volume and shape. If you have thick hair, the added moisture will cause your strands to expand, resulting in seemingly uncontrollable frizz.
Direct heat from the sun can be extremely harmful to the overall health of your hair. According to Mullette it “can have a similar effect on your hair as styling, blow-drying, and washing your hair with non-conditioning products – effectively, all these activities can dry out your hair or diminish its ability to hold on to moisture.” Likewise, exposure to UV rays can damage the molecular structure of your hair, leaving your hair dry, damaged and stripped of its colour.
So what’s the solution to keeping your hair looking fabulous in any sort of weather? Introducing the new Sunsilk Frizz & Weather Defence range – a stellar line-up of hair products designed to protect your hair against weather changes by balancing the moisture levels in your hair and shielding it from UV rays. The range comprises a Shampoo and Conditioner to cleanse and nourish, a non-sticky Frizz Control Light Cream to tame unruly hair, and a Weather Protection & Shine Serum to give your locks the perfect, protected finish.
But if you’re still not sold, just look to the locks of Sarah Jessica Parker and Cameron Diaz – they’re regularly tended to by top international hair stylist, Teddy Charles, who worked in conjunction with Sunsilk to co-create this range. And if their hair is anything to go by, he must know what he’s talking about!
