How to stop hair thinning and hair loss

We all want thick, full hair but for many of us, that can be difficult to achieve. Whether it’s due to postpartum hair loss, hormones, environmental damage, lifestyle choices or just general ageing, thinning hair is a common issue for women that can be frustrating and embarrassing.

However, stopping breakage, thinning and hair loss may actually be easier than you’d think. Here are some small changes you can make to your everyday routine to revitalise your hair and minimise breakage, thinning, and hair loss!

#1 Loosen those locks

Is your hair thinning around the face and the nape of your neck? It could be because you’re wearing your hair too tight.

Wearing tight hairstyles and ultra-hold hair accessories too often can be doing your hair more damage than you realise. The force of the tension can stress hair follicles and eventually lead to traction alopecia – gradual hair loss from pulling force on the hair. So keep hairstyles loose (or even better – hair out) and use soft, snag-free elastics.

#2 Lower the heat

We’ve all heard that heat tools, like straightening irons and curling wands, can contribute to breakage and thinning. But did you know that washing your hair in scalding hot water can do damage as well?

Your strands are more likely to snap or shed if you have the heat turned up high when you wash your hair. The reason being is that your hair is sensitive – just like your skin – so when the water is too hot, your scalp has to work harder to produce oil, making hair loss more likely.

#3 Reduce sun exposure

Sun exposure isn’t just bad for your skin – it can greatly impact the quality of your hair too!

Prolonged sun exposure can do damage to the protective cover around your hair strands called the cuticle. Sun damaged hair is dry, brittle, and frizzy, which makes it prone to breakage and thinning. Keep your hair out of the sun or lather on a protective hair mask before hitting the beach.

#4 Update your shampoo and conditioner

Thinning hair can often be the result of dandruff and debris build-up on the scalp, which you can fix by swapping to an exfoliating shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated to combat this issue.

Featuring ingredients such as wintergreen-derived salicylic acid, Aveda Invati Advanced Exfoliating Shampoo helps to cleanse the scalp and remove build-up from pores. With a hint of plant-based conditioner and a blend of Ayurvedic herbs, it also helps the shampoo stimulate hair growth, while nourishing the scalp.

Follow this with a thickening conditioner, like the Aveda Invati Advanced Thickening Conditioner. This ultra-hydrating conditioner is formulated with naturally derived amino acids that mimic hair’s building blocks to protect against breakage.

#5 Introduce a scalp treatment into your routine

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and using a regular scalp treatment is a great way to keep your hair thick and full.

bh recommends using the Aveda Invati Advanced Scalp Revitalizer once a day in conjunction with the complementary shampoo and conditioner to round out this 3-step system. The Revitalizer features a unique bio-fermented blend, infused with tangerine peel and Japanese knotweed to penetrate the scalp, stimulate follicles and support your hair’s natural keratin, in turn promoting healthy hair growth.
