Quick tips on how to protect your hair from heat styling

Let’s face it: women are never going to stop heat styling their hair

Whether you love big blow outs, dead-straight strands or bouncy waves, the need for heat is a non-negotiable. So instead of saying sayonara to your favourite style, work on getting your hair back to that better, softer place when you’re not perfecting your ‘do with these simple hair routine adjustments.

#1 USE A MASK ONCE A WEEK TO RESTORE HEALTH AND SHINE

To restore your hair to its former glory you need to make sure it’s getting the nutrients it needs. A nourishing hair mask, used once a week, can do wonders to transform hair that’s dry, brittle, and broken into a mane that’s sleek and soft.

#2 MAKE SURE HAIR IS DRY BEFORE STYLING

Wet hair and a hot hair tool aren’t a good mix. In fact, using a hot straightener or curler directly on wet (even damp) hair can cause more damage than if your hair was completely dry. The solution? Make sure your hair is completely dry before taking a straightener or curler to it. Ideally, you should leave it to dry on its own, but if you’re going to use a hair dryer, make sure to hold it a few centimetres away from your hair and angle the nozzle that the air is blowing down the shaft of your hair. Use the cold shot function when it’s dry.

#3 ALWAYS USE HEAT PROTECTANT

Regardless if the heat protector spray you’ve chosen should be used on wet, damp, or dry hair, it is essential that you use one before using a straightener or curling iron. Protector sprays have been designed to protect your hair from heat damage and breakages by preventing natural moisture to evaporating and creating a protective barrier over the hair cuticle. Sprays that contain oils will also help inject some moisture into dry locks.

#4 USE TOOLS WITH VARIABLE TEMPERATURES

Just because a hair tool automatically heats up to a gazillion degrees doesn’t mean it’s good for you. If you have thick, curly hair, 180 degrees may do just the trick to straighten your locks. But if your hair is fine, 180 degrees can cause a lot of damage. Rule of thumb? If your hair is coloured, fine, or damaged use a lower heat setting. Hot tip: a curler with variable temperature can actually help you create different kinds of curls. The hotter the temperature, the more the curl holds.

#5 LIMIT YOUR USE

This may be the toughest trick of all. Use your straightener every day? Try using it every second day. Always dry your hair with a hairdryer straight out the shower? Leave it to dry on it’s own every so often. The more relief you can give your hair from the stress of heat styling, the more your hair will thank you for it.

Do you think you’ll be able to utilise these tips? Are you already having withdrawals from using your heat styler?
