Celebrity hair stylist, Chris Appleton, has made a career out of servicing an adventurous group of A-list clientele with demanding schedules.
Kim Kardashian has tried every hair colour imaginable with Chris’ help. Jennifer Lopez has him on retainer to dream up new hairstyles for her on-stage performances, red carpet appearances, and film premieres.
Drew Barrymore hired Chris as a lifestyle consultant on The Drew Barrymore Show, and more recently, the hair stylist has started to work with Nicole Kidman during the 2025 awards season.
But rather than keep all his learned experience to himself, Chris is more than happy to share his expertise. In fact he regularly divulges industry secrets via his various social media accounts. Just this week, he treated his TikTok followers to a handful of helpful hair hacks to try at home — keep scrolling to discover the celebrity hairstylist’s top tips for better hair.
1/ The Ponytail Hack
Chris says the secret to discovering the perfect ponytail placement for your face lies in in your bone structure.
Instead of umming and ahhing over a low or high ponytail — follow the natural angle of your cheekbones — it will always look the most flattering.
“It gives you a face lift effect,” he explains.
2/ The Cold Rinse Secret
“Rinsing with cold water at the end of your shower will close the cuticle, but it also makes the hair look shinier, and less prone to frizz,” dishes Chris.
3/ The Frizz Fix
Sick of dealing with frizz and fly aways? According to Chris, this is a simple fix.
“Spray a clean tooth brush with hair spray [and] wipe it over the frizz on top of your hair,” he explains.
“It gives you the polished effect [of hairspray] without any stiffness or stickiness.”
4/ The Bobby Pin Hair Hack
Always end up losing your bobby pins? The way you’re placing them in your hair might be the problem, says Chris.
“Spray your bobby pins with hair spray to stop them sliding out when you use them,” he advises.
“Bonus tip: Use the wavy side down for a better grip.”
5/ The Volume Flip Trick
Dealing with limp, lacklustre lengths? It might be time to switch up your hair drying routine.
Blow dry your hair upside down — or flip the natural parting of your hair — for instant volume and fullness, says Chris.

Great tips, thanks for sharing.
yes the cold rinse sounds good
yes some good tips
I would love Chris Appleton to do my hair…Just once 😂
I know! It would be nice to have a professional hair stylist for one day
Yes please !!
This blog is very amazing myLoneStar
I’ve heard tip #2 is a myth
I’ve been doing this for years & I reckon it makes my hair look shinier.
I was always taught that cold water shuts the hair cuticle but conditioner also does this so I wish someone would do a comparison.
I knew the cold rinse trick but the rest are all new and fantastic!
have you tried this, might be hard in winter
In winter, I gather my hair to the side & rinse the lengths, avoiding my scalp. In summer, I do a full-body cold rinse.
Yes cold rinse tip is an old one but hard to do
I swear by the cold rinse hack. My hair also looks shinier if I brush it while I air-dry in the sun. It looks worse if it’s windy, so inside a sunny window also works.
Good tips -I have always put bobby pins wavy side up
I know the cold rinse and drying hair upside down trick. I don’t remember to do the latter enough.
Hair hacks only work if you’ve got great hair to start with. Which I do not.
Blow dry your hair upside down has been one tip I have used for volume
I would try frizzy fix tip.
I’d be interested in hack no.1 but hello he did not say anything about it, how to follow the jaw line??
Wish my hair was thick enough for this lol.
Me too!
Always handy to revisit tips
I know a few of these tips but not styling hacks, I don’t normally use hairspray.
I am on board with all these tips, but the bobby pin one (wavy side down) doesn’t work easily for me. Fortunately they tend to stay in place even with the smooth side down.
I’d add leave-in conditioner after washing hair, and an oil to suit your hair type to seal in the moisture.
These are handy tips, but could we stop calling everything a “hack”?
J Lo always has amazing hair
Some lovely hair here and I even like the males hair.
If you have a face like these women you can do anything you like with your hair and it would look good.
Good tips. I always rinse with cold water
I’ll try the anti frizz tip – sounds great!
Love to hear new haircare tips to try.
