Makeup that complements your hair colour

Do you often wonder what make-up products and which shades you should be rocking on your face? They say your face is like a blank canvas, ready to be worked on, but that doesn’t mean you should be slathering any old slap on your face. No – you need to be sporting make-up that suits you – and makes you look and feel beautiful at all times.
There are several things to consider when it comes to finding make-up that suits you; things like your skin tone, what you’re wearing and also – your hair colour. Yep, matching your make-up to your hair colour is a foolproof way to ensure you always get it right. You don’t need to stick to a certain set of rules mind you, but why don’t you check out our suggestions for a perfect hair and make-up marriage (no matter what your hair colour) below?
NATURAL BLONDE A LA TAYLOR SWIFT
Taylor knows that her natural blonde locks provide the perfect backdrop for punchy, colour-filled make-up looks. The natural hair colour counteracts with the bright colours used on her face and provides a delightful balance to the look.
How to copy her look:
As this look is all about balance, it’s important to add some colour into the mix and avoid leaving your make-up too nude and natural (after all, you don’t want your skin to blend into your hair!). Feel free to copy Taylor’s look and add some blue/grey liner to your black winged liner and a bright pink hue to your lips. We love Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil in Cool Blue/Royal Blue and Innoxa Lovely Lips in Pink Peony.
BOTTLE BLONDE A LA JAIME KING
Jaime King suits being blonde to a tee – though, it’s not her natural hair colour, so she sports that kind of yellow-tinted blonde hue that we tend to see more than we do natural blondes. This brand of blonde is light, yet dramatic – and allows for a darker make-up look. It’s for this reason that many bottle blondes tend to make a smoky eye their signature look.
How to copy her look:
Give your look an edgy twist by teaming your light tresses with a bold smoky eye. Don’t be afraid to layer your dark shades in order to achieve a truly standout smoke. For this look, we love Chi Chi Eyeshadow Quad in Bling Bling (a mix of grey and dark hues) and WASP Designer Lash DL2 – Almond Shape Cat Eye Effect. We love these lashes as they’re specifically designed to complement a smoky eye.
Handy hint: Team your smoky eye with a light pink lip like Jaime to lighten up your look a little.
BALAYAGED/TWO-TONE A LA MIRANDA KERR
Is there any hair colour she couldn’t rock? We think not – but Miranda does look particularly divine with two-tone tresses. If you’ve got highlighted hair and want to find a flattering make-up look you can rely on, there are definitely a few cues you can take from Mrs. Bloom.
How to copy her look:
The trick to working with hair that is multi-tonal is to stick to the opposite on your face. Notice how Miranda has stuck to rocking ruby red hues on her lips and cheeks? She knows that adding too many colours to the mix can take the attention away from her hair and make the whole look seem ‘busy’. For this look, we recommend using Bourjois Sweet Kiss Lipstick in Rose Desuisant and MeMeMe Blush Me Blush Box in Rouge.
REDHEAD A LA RILEY KEOUGH
Radiant redheads don’t normally need to add much colour to their make-up, but if they do, it’s important they do it right. That means using a selection of shades that carry over the depth and definition of their hair to their faces, or fear looking ‘washed out.’
How to copy her look:
Make bronzer your best friend. No really, that is the first rule. Bronzer is great for redheads, as it mimics the tone and definition of their hair to their face. It sculpts and defines and adds a shot of earthy brilliance that coincides with red hair perfectly. If you choose to keep everything else quite minimal, your whole look will blend together deliciously. Do this by brushing a natural hue through your brows, keeping your lip colour as deep and vibrant as your hair colour and sticking to earthy tones on your peepers. For this look, we recommend ASAP Pure Mineral Bronzer, Designer Brands Brow Pencil and Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Bamboo Pink.
BRUNETTE/DARK HAIR A LA MINKA KELLY
Even though brown has been pegged many times as a kind of ‘boring’ hair colour, it’s actually one of the most versatile when it comes to finding complementary make-up. As a rule of thumb, many brunettes suit colourful make-up looks more than any other hair hue, but when they want to rock a nude make-up look, they have to be pretty clever about it if they want to get it right.
How to copy her look:
It’s all about creating definition with subtle colour and framing your features well. Minka’s make-up is a perfect example of how you pull off a nude, colour-free make-up look as a brunette (top marks, Minka!). Start with a good, shimmer-free bronzer to define and ‘lift’ your cheekbones and then and add a peach tinted blush to the apples of your cheeks. Groom your brows with a dark brow pencil, use light, eye-opening shimmery shades on your eyelids and a full set of fluffy false lashes to frame your eyes perfectly. Finish things off with a glossy terracotta lipstick that will effectively tie the look together. For this look, we recommend Models Prefer Bronzer, Natio Blusher in Peach Glow, Eylure Katy Perry Lashes in Oh, My and ModelCo LIPSTICK LIP COUTURE in Dusk.

Never thought about keeping the make-up warm to avoid washing-out my skin againat my red hair. I usually tried to contrast, but it makes so much more sense to balance our my vibrant hair-colour with some colour on my face

I fall into the brunette/dark hair category, & I usually go for big fluttery lashes with blue/smokey eye shadow with white shimmery shadow in the inner corners.

Having just switched from blonde locks to a vibrant auburn, after applying of my bright pink lipstick (which looked fab last week with blonde) this morning, I realised I needed to switch up my makeup looks to compliment my new hue. This article was helpful!
