8 Halloween Hairstyles That Double As A Costume

There’s a lot to love about October: Librans are born (we see you) Starbucks starts selling pumpkin-spice everything, the days gets warmer, and if you’re into spooky stuff (or just want an excuse to play around with fake blood and eyeliner), Halloween is here for all your special FX makeup needs.

Because whether you’re into the festivities or not, you’ve got to admit, some pretty cool beauty looks are created this time of year. And while makeup is one way to do it, why not think about using your hair as a costume?

Yep, you read that right. No need to make a last-minute dash to the party store for a witch hat and broomstick. If you’ve got some bobby pins (and a whole lot of hairspray) handy, you can create some seriously cool Halloween hair.

From flower crowns to tinsel ponytails, here are the best (and most creative) Halloween hairstyles we’ve spotted so far…

Maleficent – @cintiapjasso

With the latest installment in theatres now, these Maleficent-inspired horns are very on trend. The style works best with long hair, but could easily be adapted for shorter lengths.

Flower crown filter – @nyane

A favourite amongst the Snapchat generation, the flower crown filter is a great last-minute costume idea. All you need are some flowers in your hair and a face covered in highlighter! Best of all, you can wear your hair up, down, or even in space buns like Nyané Lebajoa’s look.

Pumpkin – @tay_hair_styles

If you’re more traditional when it comes to Halloween, then this adorable twist on the classic pumpkin might be for you. Grab yourself some orange-coloured hairspray, some green scrunchies or elastics, and read up on how to achieve a bubble pony here.

Mermaid – @naturallytash

Make all your childhood dreams a reality with mermaid-inspired rainbow hair, as seen here on the self-proclaimed “Queen Of Temp Hair Colors.” While a trip to the salon would probably be your best bet, you can keep it thrifty by purchasing an array of temporary hair dyes (or wash-out chalks) for a DIY job. Simply section the hair into small groups, dying them each a different colour.

Rapunzel – @zendaya

If you’ve got length to play with or are a fan of clip-in extensions, try a loose fish-tail braid for a quick and easy Rapunzel look. You can keep it simple on its own or dress it up with some flowers and a headband.

Unicorn – @kaceymusgraves

Embrace your inner unicorn by embellishing a high pony with drips of tinsel like Kacey Musgraves. And if you can manage to find a unicorn headband, your transformation will be complete.

Barbie – @yarashahidi

Who says Barbie has to be blonde? Yara Shahidi’s bubble gum pink wig is the perfect way to rock a modern day Barbie costume without actually having to wear a costume.
