Winter beauty mistakes to stop making
As a diehard summer fan, I don’t cope well in winter, and despite being born in June, even the gifts and birthday cake can’t sway me. Along with chapped lips, pale bumpy skin and frizzy hair, there are a million and one other not so wonderful hazards of winter I dread every year.
Ahead, four winter beauty mistakes we commonly make, and how to solve them.
Yes ladies, winter is a cruel mistress.
LINGERING IN A HOT SHOWER
Look, we get it. When the temps are low, nothing feels better than turning your morning shower into an extra-hot 30-minute steam session, but after about 10 minutes, all that heat begins to compromise your skin’s lipid layer – the fatty acids responsible for holding in that precious moisture. The compromise? You’ve got two options: turn down the heat or shorten your shower time. If you can manage both, more power to you.
STICKING WITH YOUR SUMMER BRONZER
We miss our golden summer glows just as much as the next person, but now’s not the time to be nostalgic. While adding warmth to the face is a definite must during these months, it’s best to do so with a flattering shade of blush for your skin tone. If that’s still not enough, create a little glow with an illuminator or highlighter.
NOT UPDATING YOUR HAIR COLOUR
Those white blonde highlights that looked perfect in summer can accentuate all the wrong things in winter (aka your pallid complexion), and the same goes for darker, single-processed shades. If you’re blonde, weave golden highlights and lowlights through your current colour to warm things up, especially around your face. If you’re brunette, opt for a multi-dimensional look or a soft balayage (try the Schwarzkopf Ultimate Colour in Hazel Nut - the colour is perfect for face-framing). Just remember not to go more than two shades lighter or darker – anything too dramatic can look severe against your winter skin tone. However, you can always fix unwanted colour with the ColourB4 Hair Colour Remover if you run into any drama.
It might be cold and dreary outside, but that doesn’t mean the sun isn’t impacting your skin. No matter what time of day or season, the sun can still cause damage, and over time, that damage can be detrimental. Make life just that little bit easier, and apply a moisturiser with broad-spectrum SPF.
