The Bold, Bright Hair Colours To Try In Lockdown If You’re Looking For A Shade Switch-Up

Call it the Hilary Duff effect (in case you missed it, Hils dyed her blonde hair bright blue in isolation and it looks GLORIOUS), but lockdown definitely has us considering switching up our hair colour game.

And while blondered and brunette are always going to be beautiful, you know what’s a thousand times more fun? Pink hair. Or blue hair. Or purple hair that makes it look like you’re auditioning to play Hit Girl in Kick-Ass 3. Basically, any bright, bold shade under the sun.

Because while we know you’re already keeping busy with multiple sheet masks, trying a vibrant new hair hue might also be a fun way to switch things up during social distancing – especially since lockdown offers a rare window of time to experiment freely without your boss’s judgment (FYI, most video chat apps do have black and white filters, if you’re keen to keep your shade switch-up on the DL).

From pink and green to blue and yellow , here are the fabulous fashion hair colours you should test-drive while you can.

Blue: Schwarzkopf

Hilary Duff’s blue hair walked so yours could run; that’s right: it’s totally on trend. Any colour from pale sky to deep navy will look stellar, but we’re particularly partial to the stunning Schwarzkopf LIVE Colour Ultra Brights in the shade Electric Blue right now.

Red: Redken

This isn’t your typical red hair dye: think less Jessica Chastain, more Jessica Rabbit. Honestly, if you’re looking to make a screen-siren style statement, scarlet strands are about as cool-girl as it gets, plus, with a deep, warm shade like the Redken Colour Rebel in Rebel Without A Coralthe fading out process should be on the smoother side. Plus, if you’re not quite ready to completely commit, this temporary and smudge-free formula rinses out in just two washes.

Green: Clairol

Big Billie Eilish energy. No longer just the colour of blonde that’s been in chlorine too long, The Clairol Colour Crave Semi-Permanent Hair Colour in teal is definitely having a moment. Stars from Katy Perry to Kylie Jenner have all gone green in the past too, so it’s safe to say it’s well and truly celeb-approved.

My hair looked and felt well conditioned, the colour looked good and was what I was expecting. It lasted about 10 washes and I like that it faded true-to-colour.” – Lisa395

$10 at Priceline

Pink: Fudge Professional

Whether your goal aesthetic is Frenchy from Grease‘s pastel hue or Nicki Minaj-esque neon, the Fudge Paintbox in Pink Riot is a classic for very good reason. Celebs from Hailey Bieber to Ricky Martin (see, pink has range) have all embraced the shade, and we have a feeling you’re going to be next.

I am totally obsessed! I have been using the pink ones for over a year , and I have never has any issues with it and what I love the most is it’s so easy to apply and done without 10mins .” – Kathryn304

Purple: L’Oreal Paris

Anyone a Futurama fan? This L’Oréal Paris Colorista Wash Out purple dye gives us major Leela vibes. Purple is one of our absolute favourite brights; cooler than pink, but warmer than blue, it’s perfect for making your skintone pop. It’s also a deeper, darker kind of bright that has a damn good chance of showing up on brunette hair as well.

“It was easy to apply and is basically a dye, even though they don’t call it that. It’s not like a temporary paint, it’s applied the same way as a semi-permanent hair dye.” – Lisa359

$16.95 at Woolworths

Orange: Lime Crime

Now, we know ‘orange’ has been billed for far too long as the iffy shade that occurs as a result of bad bleaching or red not going right, but we’re peachy keen on this neon take on the shade. The Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Semi Permanent Hair Colour in Neon Peach is fun, fresh and leaves you looking like you’ve coated your strands in orange sherbet (in like, the coolest way possible).

$24.95 at Beserk.com.au

Yellow: Dare

Ever wanted to look like you’ve rinsed your strands with a pineapple cocktail? No? Well, trust us, it’s a mood. So, if your blonde is heading to the yellow side without your regular salon toner touch-up, we say embrace it by going full out with a canary yellow colour with Dare’s No.18 Temporary Hair Colour in Lemon Slayed.

  1. I love vibrant colour on other people’s hair. Over the last 2 years, I’ve embraced the greys and my hair is almost snow white. I’m too chicken to use colour now as I’m sure it would “grab” and take ages to grow out.

  2. I have had colourful hair for most of the last 7 years. It's so much fun. I'm trying to decide what colour scheme to do next, thinking maybe peacock colours, if not it will be pink, purple or turquoise or a mixture of two or 3 of them

  3. I would love to go colourful but my daughter has added doubt to the mix. She said I need to be careful because of my rosacea as depending on what colours I use it can make my redness stand out more 🙁

  4. I loved having purple hair for 7 years, I got a lot of compliments and questions, also a lot of weird looks, back then it wasnt common around here, but l am a bit tired of it now, just the ends are purple and eventually it will all be grey/silver.

  5. I'm currently wearing red hair, but it has faded and now I have regrowth of grey hair. Can't go to hair salon for this COVID-19 Lock Down time to redo my hair. I don't think purple would suit my complexion.

  6. I haven't done a bright colour (going copper was bright enough for me!), but I know an older lady who has gone down the bright blue & purple route & I have thought about following her lead once I go fully grey. I think it'd be fun.

  7. One of Pinterest boards is dedicated to amazing hair. I wish I had more courage to do something adventurous with mine…pink highlights or dark tips with platinum blonde mane. I love the purple in the photo above.
